I was just recently gave a jack russel and shepard mix some of the old timers has told me that i should not get rid of it because it would make a good hunting dog they said to eather train it on squirrel or coon but i dont know which i hunt both does any one know what this dog would be best suted for any information would be a great help the dog is only 4 months old and i have him in the dog lot now i know i should start training him asap but i need to know on what thanks for your time

You should focus on obedience first, with getting the dog to come when called being priority. Teaching it manners around people would be good too, unless you are just going to leave it in a kennel all the time.

Spend as much time with the dog as possible and take it with you everywhere that you can. Lots of socialization with people, kids and other dogs. Typically, when you are doing the type of hunting you are talking about, you will be with other people and dogs, so you want your dog to know how to behave properly around them.

After obedience, you need to start introducing them to gun fire and whatever type of game you are going to be using them for.
