I've hunted GMU18 during rifle season last 2yrs without success. My being new to colorado elk hunting is mostly to blame. A coworker and I decided to try muzzleloader season this year. Anyone with any success stories or helpful info for north of Hot Sulfer Springs? Also general ML hunting info would also be helpful.

Thanks!!!

There is a Division of Wildlife office in Hot Sulphur Springs. If I was you, that is who I'd get in touch with. I've done some rifle hunting in 18 but have never hunted the ML season there. I took a big cow on Grouse Mtn in the late rifle season many years ago. But I couldn't begin to tell you where to hunt in 18 these days. So call the DOW and talk to the experts.

As to advice on ML in general, it is usually pretty warm during that season. I always get into the thick dark timber and hunt really slow. Nothern facing hillsides with water seem to be the best bet in my experience. Those hillsides are usually a little cooler and elk have to water daily when it is hot. When in doubt, stake out the trails leading to and from waterholes. Don't hunt the holes themselves because you can drive the game away that way. Trail watching works if you have the patience. I never had that patience so I still hunt. I've taken 8 or 9 elk, mostly bulls hunting this way.
