My uncle and I are planning a hunt for about 3 to 5 days for my first Bull elk. We have always wanted to hunt in the Durango CO area on public land. Does anyone have any tips on which area would be the best to find a big public land bull?

I live in that area.  There are some big ones here, but they are few and far between on public.  To find a 300" bull in our area on public is probably less than 5%.  That being said, how physically able are you, do you have horses?  As with any public land, the more secluded area you can get to the better the chances.  We have had a couple of fires to the east of us this year, which may force a few more elk than normal into the Beaver Meadows area(just outside of Bayfield).  My other reccomendation is in the old burn areas on Missionary ridge.  Tough area but there are some tricks and trails that help the hunter there.  You can contact me if you like at ateam@frontier.net.
