I pulled an Elk unit 30 any Elk tag here in Wyoming for this fall. The Unit is less than 30 minutes from my house. G&F said " don't shoot the first 300 bull you see". Scouted last weekend, saw 15 bulls.
Anyone that pulled a elk unit 30 tag for Wyoming, I'm willing to hook up with ya! Only 40 any Elk tags out there, and only 40 cow tags for the Unit. Let me know if anyone pulled?

Sorry Guys, I'm having putor problems! Haven't been able to get in for a bit!!!
The Hunt was probally one of the best, and most disappointing Elk hunts I have ever had! I've never hunted Elk like this before. I've almost always hunted Elk in the dark timber. First time was in 1980! Got addicited and have hunted them every year since! This hunt was in open ground, sage, grass and small Junipers. I hunted Bow in September and Rifle in October. Begain scouting when I pulled the tag. I'm new to Wyoing, move here about 7 years ago from Washington State, so the area was new to me. The hunt was totaly awesome! I was able to hunt 26 days. I saw 6x6 Bulls 21 of those 26 days, most were in the 280 to 320 class, I was looking for a 350 or better. Day after Day I passed even going after some of the 6x6's I saw. Knew there some ass scratchers out there, I'd seen them. Saw some bulls that were pushing 400+, hunted a couple 7x7's that I'm sure would have been in the 340-375 range. And got close to several Bulls during Bow season that if everything had been right, I'd had let an arrow fly. End of the season, with an any Elk tag, I was just ready to put meat in the freezer. Cow, Calf, small bull, didn't matter! Hunted 26 Days, 21 days I saw 6x6 bulls or better, saw cows an calfs many of those days. One day I saw only small rag horn bulls and some cows/calves. One day early in the season I saw no Elk.
Last 3 days I hunted I saw no Elk. Passing up Elk for two months, September Bow and October Rifle, I'd have never guessed that the last 3 days I could hunt I'd see nothing!
I ate my tag!!!!!!
Tag Soup!!! But, guess thats what you get, when you get old and picky!

Congrats on an enjoyable time! Never hunted elk but even after 45+ years of whitetail hunting, just hearing something coming gets the heart beating. |

Steve, I was 42 before I bit the bullet and "went out West" and that was for muley and gotes.....at your age, did my first Elk hunt. Hunted them a bunch since then! The country they live in makes it awesome even if no kill! I have DIYed in COL, drop camped in ID, kinda drop hunted (3 guides,7 hunters) in Bob Marsall/Scapegoat of MT, guided hunt in BC, NM and AZ. If you really like whitetail, bite the bullet and Elk hunt! Nothing like an Elk bugle to raise the hackles on your neck! |

Thanks Tom!
Know Terry (7MM Mag) and I are going to have a another great hunt. This will be the third time Terry has made the trip from Michigan west to share an Elk camp with me. Once in Idaho and for a second time here in Wyoming. I totally enjoyed the hunts we've shared before. Know we'll have a great time in the fall of 2013!!! Won't be hunting the special unit I hunted last fall, the units this fall will be with a General tag. I've seen some good Bulls up there, that I'm still looking for. Ha! But mostly it's an any Elk area, so can shoot any Elk. If ya want meat shoot the first cow/calf ta see. Ya want horns, ya might have to pass up some shots and might eat your tag. It's all DIY on Public Land! My kinda hunt! I don't guide, got no horses. Just share my camp with family an invited NAHC members. I'm 59 this month, my knees and everything else are gettin OLD! But, I still make the effort to get as far back in, as I can!
This being my thirty third year having hunted the elusive Wapiti, I'm still as addicted as after my fist hunt in1980. Enjoy every moment I spend out there, scouting, hunting, or just an evening watching the sun go down and the stars coming up. Elk are the bonus!
Ya gotta love that!

DANG !,.. There's got to be some sort of bug with this website. I've been "subscribed" to this thread for quite some time now and never receive any email notifications that anyone has posted !
Anyways,.. I started my journeys West back in the late 90's after waiting for a literal lifetime of TRYING to get picked in Michigan's Elk Lotto since its conception. I figured seeing I was 47 years old it was time to seek alternatives if I was ever going to get a try at elk so my first try at it was Montana out in Beartooth. Since that point I've been in Idaho twice in Ray Vincents camp and this trip out West this coming fall with Dean (our 3rd time together) will be my 5th attempt at the elusive wapiti.
Just a side note,.. I have yet to get drawn here at home in Michigan! BUT,.. I keep putting in anyway,..
I too am anxious to hit those hills with Dean again,.. and the age factor as with Dean is slowly creeping up on me as well (I'll be 62 this June) but I'm going to keep on going even if I need someone to push me around in a chair with wheels,.. LOL! There's just nothing like being with good folk who are into hunting and getting to share the experiences regardless of "tagging-out" or not. All of my hunts out west have been DIY with the exception of my first in Montana which was a horseback pack-in,.. LOTS of fun,.. LOTS of MONEY as well,.. it was a good first time experience hunting elk regardless of not tagging one.
This fall come October,.. all that's going to change. I can foresee meat packed in coolers with dry-ice following me home !
The hammer is going to fall and something will be finally coming to a liftime reality,.. then the REAL work will need to be done!

After 32 years hunting them, I've come to the conclusion that there are no easy Elk. Only time Elk are easy is when someone gets real lucky, and that don't happen often. JMO Elk are easy, as the are predictable. But, because of where they live and go, they are one of the toughest game animals I ever pursued. If you want one, you'll work your butt off doing it! JMO

Boy now that's the truth,... no need tellin' me about the "live n' GO" scenario !
I'll never forget the area they had us running them down last time out with you !
All of those dead-fall/ wind blown trees ,.. Hurt myself that time for sure I barely got back up that other drainage side !
Even so,.. still lookin' forward to doin' it all over again |
