I was wondering if there are sounds tht elk make that are not commonly used by hunters, that attract them. I use the common type calls that everyone uses but try to vary them by drawing out sounds and still keeping to basic structure of the call, seems to be working, just trying not to sound like every other hunter that has bought tge latest and greatest call and mimic the dvd's. Don't want the elk to think there are a dozen "Waddels" hunting and a dozen of whoever is the "flavor of the month" runnin' in the trees. I' m trying to sound different, and if any other sounds can be used to get away from the norm., thanks guys.

I once called in a bull by blowing into an empty shell case and making a whistling sound. granted the elk were not very educated to hunters in that unit as there were no hunts open and when he got close I switched to cow calls

One of the oldest calls I use is a flexable natuarl gas line it gives an excellent bugle and is not used by very many people and very handy to have in your call bag try one about 18 inches long and roll it in a loop then pratice with it will sound different everyone else. good luck and be safe

smack ur palm against the end of ur tube when ur close to a bull, this will piss him off. for real try it1 they only do this noise when they are past the point of being worked up, and are ready to breed right now! its crazy the things they will respond to, its crazy the noises they themselves will make that cant be mimicked. but if you have a damsel ready and willing i dont think wed care what noise she made either

I have used what is kind of a mix between a grunt and a bark. They really make this noise quite frequently. I believe it is a way of allowing other elk to know where they are. I have herd it when they are in bachelor groups prior to the rut and when they are moving their cows around. It is kind of strange to explain. If you can get close enough in the late summer you will hear it used even by the cows.

Thanks guys will look into gas line papa, and try it, horndog I used "glunking" last year and pulled in a bull, and Tsnake will look into the hybrid sound. Cs might keep a shell casing in my pocket if all else fails, who knows might be my goto call
