If you want to email me at hamklm2@sbcglobal.net I would be glad to help you. When I go on a cow elk hunt in unit 61 in Colorado this fall, it will be my 9th elk hunt in Colorado. Two of those hunts were bow hunts. Again, I can line you up with a great outfitter who will allow you to hunt on your own or with a guide. http://www.sportsmansdream.com/ You can go to that web site and meet him. When you get the Sportsmansdream site, click on hunting, than click on Colorado and you will see Purcell'g Big Game Adventures. I have become good friends with Dale, since he is the outfitter I have used since 1998.

Been a while since I was young and full of pizz and vinegar to drop camp, but I had very good success at it. BUT, our group studied state statistics very closely and picked areas with good success ratios. Ther were anywhere from four to six of us. We dropped camped in Selway-Bitterroot, ID for several years and in COL a couple of times. Never failed to kill fewer than two elk and usually a couple or three deer....there was also a SSS situation once...also got a cuppla bears. No recommendation on Outfitters cuase it's been too many years but the States have co-operative G&F personnel and maps of where the kills took place. Study them, then get reccommended Outfitter lists from State. You can find a place to kill your Elk!

We did a drop camp just west of tensleep, Wyoming in 2010 for muleys and antelope. Saw lots of elk sign in that area. We did well, filling 9 tags between 4 hunters in just a couple days (lot of them were does). We met up with a game warden who was very nice and helpful, as were most other people in that area
