Then; Indianapolis was 2 1/2 miles of brick

Today; only 1yd of bricks remain

Then; Cars reached the breakneck speed of 90MPH

Today; Cars exceed 200MPH

Then; Drivers were in open cockpits

Today; Drivers are surrounded by a carbon/kevlar tub

Then; Drivers wore leather helmets and had no seatbelts

Today; Drivers wear state of the art helmets with a HANS device and five point harnesses

Then; Cars were built like bricks and transferred all crash energy to the driver

Today; Cars are built so they come apart and shed energy so energy transfer is minimized.

Then; Cars had metal fuel tank that spewed burning fuel on the driver and track

Today; Cars have puncture resistant bladders greatly reducing fire risk

Then; Drivers wore leather coats and cotton clothing.

Today; Drivers wear fire resistant Nomex suits.

Then; Drivers died in wrecks

Today; Drivers die in wrecks.

It was a great race today in the new machines. They set a new record for lead changes, though much of that was due to the Target cars playing leap frog in the last 40 laps.  I hate too see them finish under caution though.

Agreed LD NASCAR got smart and gave the fans what they wanted. Ever notice in Sprint car, World of Outlaws, and Super Mods laps under caution DON'T COUNT!

It is true drivers still die but not as many. That is a chance that they know and are willing to take. I think it would be impossible to have 42 cars running at 200 mph and never have a death,if they crash it is going to happen sooner or later.

Way too many rules today,I gave up on Nascar about 4years ago some rules just don't apply to certain drivers I just got sick of it.Have not watched a race in years.Dale would be sick if he was still alive today.
