I know this isn't a real common hunting breed but with the current reputation of one half of the breed and the past reputation of the other half, i was wondering how good they really are in the field. I am currently deployed to Afghanistan and found out that my son is allergic to dogs. The poodle half of the breed naturally helps with dander control so i may be looking for one when i return. I've only ever seen one of these dogs out in the field and that is all i can say, he was out there not really hunting. I've posted this in the hunting dog section as well and not getting a lot of results i thought maybe i would try it here too. I'm looking for anyone who hunts them, seen them hunted,or knows really anything about them, good or bad, to help decide if this is the way i want to go. Thank you in advance.

No self respecting waterfowler that I know would dare to even admit to owning such an animal much less ever dare to take one afield . The comments from the "guys" would be too much to bear. In the words of one trainer/ breeder I spoke with " some things should be left alone and thats not a breed its a mutt".

Oh, I see how things are. If it had to come down to it and I am forced into getting one I will stag photos if needed with the dogs sitting behind at least 2 limits of duck it "retrieved".

I all reality what is any breed of dogs? Weren't they all crossed with one another to get the specific traits from each breed to make a dog for any job? Does that make the lab a mutt? A GSP a mutt?

rburrows, I'm sorry I do appreciate the comment. I understand the $#!+ I will take from my fellow hunters, but at least I will have a good enough reason to shut them up in my eyes.

I hunted pheasants with a family friend that had one. She was a great dog. I had no clue what it was so I had to ask and he told me it was a labradoodle. He is from Chicago and lives in the city and he explained that they are very popular in the big cities for hunters because you can have them in the house and they dont shed, or atleast very little at most.

As for it being part poodle..who cares. they originally were bred for hunting. I will hunt behind any good hunting dog. I respect a good hunting dog..could care less what it is. Only thing I would stress is get one from a hunting breeder. There is a few people that breed for show..DONT GET ONE OF THOSE..lol  Good Luck on your search for a new dog.

I don't know squat about the dog you are talking about. But thank you for defending our country!

Yeah I know the ribbing can be hard to bare at times if a "Doodle" is what you really (and I mean REALLY) want ,I'd check around first to see if anyone else can give first hand info on hunting with them . I personally have found that most owners of this breed wanted them for allergy reasons and the breeders sometime are of the opinion that this a really special breed and charge accordingly.

By the way that trainer I spoke with absolutely refused to train my fullblood English Chocolate Lab or any Chocolate lab calling them too hard headed and not worth his time!

The Choc I have is a great retreiver and had no trouble getting him to retrieve, when I can get him to jump out of the boat, land is no problem , its the stay untill told to retrieve that we're still working on . The rascals 120lbs and will nearly yank my arm out socket if I'm holding him on a leash!

Bud's Choc is a great dawg....one more time of listening to his trainer at six years old and he could get Master Hunter on only his fifth try.....no problems for actual duck hunting....just a little break here and there and a go over there instead of coming here problem in trials......Bud that owns him says he is the best duck dog he ever had....I then always say, "Compared to my old meat Dog Abe?"...he then says that's an unfair question....
