I like to still hunt...that means sitting and waiting for game to cross my path. This has worked for me in Alaska hunting moose. I also think like the animal I am hunting. My grandson and I both drew Special Hunt Tags here in NM for Mulies in Unit 37 Ruidoso in Nov. Anyone have any pointers?

Thanks much!
Whats your first name? I figure my technique will work with most any game. Besides patience is a great virtue for the hunter. What will you be going after this year?

Your welcome, and it's Jeff. I doubt I will be going after much more than a general license gets me again this year, with the exception of maybe deer. I haven't gotten well enough established here yet to be able to go after much more. This is only my second year here. We did find a decent spot for deer that is close enough to drive back and forth everyday so thats why I included them, seen both mule and whitetails in a place we predator called last winter so, maybe. Good luck this fall on your hunt though.

Welcome! I'm in the east so sadly I have no help for you either. Someone on here has to though. ;-)

'Round here "still hunting" is taken to mean you're on the move - albeit slow enough that sometimes it doesn't seem like you're moving but moving. "Stand" hunting is what we call staying on one place. But "you say tomato.... " ;-)

About all I go out for is tree rats and whitetail.

Hello Holly. I grew up in San Fernando CA so I know about Fruits and Nuts for sure. I am disabled but can get around ok if I take it slow. Heck you gotta be quiet when hunting anyhow. Good to meet you.

Thanks much. Scouting out areas is very good advice and can save me lots of hobbling along through the woods. All I have to do is fugure out how to keep my 11yo grandson quiet. Good luck to you too this year. Hope to see that you were successful. Good to meet you

Thanks Steve. I was born in Buffalo! Yes Stand or Still hunting both apply in my case. I have bad hips, but can chug along slowly if need be. Tree Rats hey that sounds like a blast. I hunt Coyotes here as they are plentiful in New Mexico. Good luck to you and its good to meet you

Black bear? Nice, we have some big ones here in NM too. Id like to hunt them. Do you hunt bear on your own or do you take a guide?

as for me i never hire a guide, for 1 i am to cheap! and in my case i get more satisfaction from doing it myself! besides here it is not that tough, drive to 1 hillside and glass the other side! takes a decent gun but if you can shoot 350 to 400 yards you have a chance to get 1! and yeah there blackies here, no browns in wahington state! but we have both elk i believe mostly rosies but we do have the rocky mountain 1`s too

lots of blackies in the east but probably way different hunting methods. I've never hunted them 'cause we don't care much for the flavor and the only thing I take down are things that end up on our table.

But, I wouldn't use a guide around here. If it's legal in the state (it's not in NY) a lot of folks hunt over bait of a pit that's had used cooking oil (usually from fast food restaurants) or donuts (they love sweets), etc. I'm not going to start up the bait vs no-baiting "discussion" again so I'll just say that method is personal preference. So scouting areas out and stand hunting are the most often used methods around here. Or if there's fresh snow (probably not something you'll run across.. ;-) ), tracking can work well as well if you cut a fresh track.

I know some pro guides up in Maine (they hunt over bait mainly) and they prefer it when guys bring a 3" 12gauge for bear. They said if you hit the front shoulder with a slug, the bear may need a finishing shot but they're not going to have to track it through the thick Maine woods. A blackie is dangerous enough but a wounded blackie is absolutely brutal.

Washington sounds like good hunting grounds. We have some huge elk here too, but I choose not to hunt anything that big after getting my Alaskan moose which was as big as a draft horse...dressed out to alot of great meat. Couldnt pack anything that big out with my disability. I will try blackie hunting sooner or later because ive allways had the want to do it and we have some good size bears here. Being a former Marine I have no problem with even a 500 yard shot or more with my Nikon BDC scope (my glasses on) and my Smith & Wesson I-Bolt 30-06. My other cousin is coming down from AK this month and we are going to hunt some coyotes. Happy hunting talk soon

Sounds great Steve. When I lived in Alaska a woman I knew had a cabin in the sticks. She had a big problem with bears breaking into the cabin and scarfing up all her food supplies. The dang things allways clened out the sweets as you mentioned they do love sugar etc. My brother and I went out there at her request to try to bait and blast the nuissance bear or bears. We set out bacon, got on the roof of the cabin and waited...but they must have known something was up because during a whole weekend they never showed up! Even with bacon as bait. Maybe we should have tried honey. I never use a guide either as I agree it is best to do it yourself. Have a great night. talk soon
