They don't call it hunting for nothing!
Unfortunately, taking a turkey this year just was not meant to be. Although I got to see a few toms strutting around, none of them came close enough for a shot. I could blame the 40 mph winds on opening day (and day 2), or the rain, or the farmers for plowing and planting corn in the field I was hoping to see turkey in (only saw a hen or two), or the neighbors for running their ATVs directly behind my setup, or the trespasser
wanting to try out his new AR (on opening day, no less!)...but I won't do that. No, it just goes to prove that nothing is guaranteed when it comes to beating a turkey at HIS game.
Now I have the opportunity to take my son-in-law on his first turkey hunt.
Hopefully it will go better for him - while we still have venison in the freezer, I definitely enjoy the bird on the grill. Perhaps the turkeys I heard gobbling at sun up on several days will take a left turn instead of a right turn and land in the field we are set up in instead of the neighbor's woods. We can only hope!
