Just drew a NM unit 34 elk tag  .  Any help in finding some elk in that area or good places to start looking would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

First of all, Congrats.  I only drew out for deer with a bow in 34.  Where are you from and what hunt did you draw?  I will send you a PM later.

Coming down from Iowa.  It'll be a haul.  Drew a muzzleloader tag.  Oct 13-17.  I've been appling for several years.  I didn't think I'd ever really draw a tag.  I'm still in shock.

Thanks

Thats a good hunt.  You will enjoy it.  Lots of bugling, best part of the rut as far as I am concerned.  2 of my bulls were during that hunt.

Really?  Sweet.  I was just hoping to hear that there was any bugling and rut action going on.  I just figured it was during the time that thre rut was winding down.  That's awsome news. You got both bulls in unit 34?  What's the terrain like in that area?  I guess I better get some cow calls and practice up.

Thanks for the help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Canyonman. I have hunted unit 34 late season cow. But early to mid october should be a great hunt for 34. Bulls should be bugling like crazy, and should be a lot of fun. My dad was sucessful on our hunt. We ran into a herd of elk off of pump house canyon road. Plenty of places to camp on pump house road. If you go down pumphouse road roughly two miles there will be a few pull off spots on your left hand side. If you get to a cattle guard you have gone too far. But pull into on of the pulloffs on the left hand side of the road. I would recomend heading north east from you vehicle from that point. As you start to head down the canyon it is amazing elk country, there will be sign everywhere, and you will most likely see a lot of turkeys. I saw over 40 turkeys on my hunt. It will open up into a giant gully at the bottom with deep cover on either side. This is where we ran into the heard and we killed an elk as well as another group killed two, and another group killed one all out of the same herd as after the first shot the herd moved into these guys. Another place i would recomend trying would be around high rolls. We saw elk there on our way out of the hunt. Apparantly from the people I have talked to there is an apple orchard on the south side of the road and the elk go into there every evening, and that is exactly where we saw the elk. So if you can find out where they are bedding down at and spending their daytime I think that would be a great spot to hunt. Best of luck on your hunt hope you get a monster Bull!!! Hard hunt to draw, maybe never get it again enjoy it!

Is this a bow or rifle tag? Dates of hunt?

Ok, you can find several average bulls in the Sunspot area off of SR 6563 south of Cloudcroft. Also try FR64 from the Sunspot highway to the east towards Weed NM..Lots of good bulls in this area. We killed a 390 bull just south of Weed NM in an area called Jim Lewis/Perk Canyon. High Rolls is good but a lot of private property you have to by-pass. Good luck, and post a photo and story when you tag the monster!

Elk hunting is far better than deer hunting. I have a deer tag for that area, wish I was pulled for elk. Good luck. Let me know if you see any good bucks!!

I would stay away from the reservation line.  If you stick an elk near the boundary you cant cross the line to track it down.  I hear they have scouts watching for trespassers.  A buddy of mine stuck an elk near the line, tracked it over the line.  He then called the Mescalero Tribe for help getting the elk out and they told him to bring a wad of money to pay the fine!  The bulls know that they are safe here and all the cow calling will not bring em over the fence line.  Bottom line, avoid this area!  I have hunted and scouted unit 34 for over 30 years!Stay with the areas that I have mentioned in my other posts.  Good Luck!
