I live in Nebraska so no bears, maybe a bull or mt lion as a former rancher I don't think bull is a major player here. Mt. lion is likely or a rabied skunk 2 and 4 legged type. I have been toying idea of getting a 4 inch 38 to plink and carry out knocking about. We have a snub nose 38 already so won't need another ammo type. Real question is will 4" .38 spec be enough for say a mangy coy/dog at 35-50 yrds? I have a DW RZ10mm now and wanting to sell it (need the cash for Dr bills) but hate to give up my field gun. Thanks for your thoughts. |

I would personally try to go with a 6" barrel rather than 4' just because the longer sight radius= more accuracy at any distance. If what you find in your price range happens to be a .357mag you could still stick with the .38 ammo you have if you wanted. That would save both your ears, and your wallet. At those ranges I would surest at least a +P round in .38 though. |

For more years then most have been alive, I did pack a .38 spc. thru the cascades of Oregon. It was plenty adequate for what I needed it for. Everything from the lil skunk to the big cat, and a few deer in between! I did use a 6" barrel, but for what you want, a 4" will do ya just fine! |

IMHO I would opt for a .357 Mag..still be able to shoot the .38sps and +Ps, but also have the option for that extra "thump" when ya want it...prices will be some what close for the gun but that extra edge headed into high country might give ya just a bit more peice of mind....4 or 6 inch barrle will do..giving the edge to the 6 inch for accuracy and the 4 inch for deployment.... |

Thanks guys I think I look at revolvers after I sell my 10mm and see if any money is left after Dr bills. For a trail gun I like shorter barrels. I have a 6inch 44 mag if ever head up to bear country but is longer than I like to carry. This revolver will be purely a knock about gun and plinker. I reload and cast my own bullets so cost of 38 round is very low. Though I won't pass on 357 or larger if price is right. I saw a police trade-in 38 believe it was Taurus or Rossi for like $180 a few months back was what started me thinking 38. I have had three foot surgeries in past year has depleted my fun funds but released to walk now so ready to bum the pastures. |
