I recently adopted a 9 year old German short hair pointer from a rescue organization.  She is an awesome dog, but has a major anxiety issue with storms.  She goes into a panic and tries to dig through the walls and floors of our home.  We tried to calm her by petting and playing with her, tried the storm jackets they sell at pet stores, and crating her during storms, but nothing seems to work.  The vet prescribed her some pills that really calm her down, these work, but turn her into a zombie for a day.  I would hate to half to return her to the rescue, but I don't know what else to do with her.  Anyone have a similar experience and can shed a little light on our problem?  I suspect this is why she ended up at the rescue in the first place.

I grew up with dogs, so i know what your talking about.

First, what is the definition of "storm" are you using? is it when there is massive thunder and lightning? or is it just a little rain?

If you truly do not wish to return her to the rescue center, then go with the medicine. Think about it, how often is there a storm? not that often. Sure, you can have a week where it storms for 4 days out of 7, but that passes. Majority of the year are cloudy to sunny days. Thunderstorms rarely happen, So if i was you, id stick with giving the dog the medicine to help keep her calm. By the time she comes out of the zombie stance, the storm is over and your dog is happy.

My son has a dog that they have to give meds to when it storms.

My little, old Brittnay doesn't like storms, and wants to be near people, or, huddled on the bed, but, she's not bad enough to have to medicate.
