Mark, I read that story too, just figured they didn't feel the need to be too specific. I was going by the time on the license machine, I figured it has to have a direct link to whatever offical time they use.

I have to admit that I'm a bit surprised at the #'s, almost 25% of the quota has been met on the first weekend, but... It's been many years since the wolves have been hunted, I would have to believe that the #'s are going to slow down now that the wolves have "officially been put on notice" that they're fair game.

2012 wolf hunt information.

No wolf for the wife. Heard them, saw the tracks and had them on the deer gutpiles but no luck. She also tried a fawn bleat call.

Has anyone heard if the second season tags sold out? I believe the deadline was the 15th.

I don't know if it's true, but I heard that the majority of the 614 tags that didn't sell in the early season were left by anti's that were trying to mess with the hunt, but didn't spend the money for the tags. If it is true, I guess that trick didn't work as the leftover tags sold out in less than five minutes

Surplus wolf hunting licenses go on sale Monday, November 19
Submitted by wtip on Sat, 11/17/2012 - 7:32am

Around Cook County

Applicants not selected in this year’s early or late season wolf license lottery can purchase a surplus hunting or trapping license on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at noon on Monday, Nov. 19.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says there are 187 surplus hunting licenses and 130 surplus trapping licenses available for the late season. The late season begins Saturday, Nov. 24, and concludes Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, provided late season harvest targets in each of Minnesota’s three wolf zones are not met.

Eligible hunters and trappers may purchase a surplus license of their choice regardless of the season they selected when applying for the lottery. When buying a surplus license, purchasers must specify a firearm license to hunt or a wolf trapping license to trap. An individual may purchase only one wolf license.

Surplus late season wolf hunting and trapping licenses are valid when the late season is open in any of the state’s three wolf hunting zones.

Trappers born after Dec. 31, 1989, must have a trapper education certificate to purchase a surplus wolf trapping license if they have not purchased a trapping license in a previous license year.

If all licenses are not purchased by unsuccessful applicants, any eligible hunter or trapper, regardless of whether he or she entered the wolf season lottery, may purchase a remaining late season license beginning at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 21.

Surplus wolf licenses are available from any DNR license agent or online at www.mndnr.gov/buyalicense. Online buyers should proceed to checkout immediately after selecting a surplus wolf license and quickly submit payment information to improve their chances of obtaining a license.

The DNR allocated 2,400 wolf licenses for the late hunting and trapping season.

Complete wolf hunting regulations are available online at www.mndnr.gov/hunting/wolf.

Thanks for the info Mark.

I got to our local store (local meaning 6 miles away) 5 minutes early today, and there were already two guys waiting ahead of me. It didn't matter tho, the first guy didn't even get one of the surplus tags

I posted this in the Misc. forum, but see that I forgot to post it here.

A week ago today I had this guy come threw at 11:02PM. On Thursday morning we let the dog out at a little after 7:00AM, we've not seen him since then.

I really wanted one of those surplus tags

Oh man, Lunkerdog, that doesn't look or sound good.  Maybe next year I will apply for a tag, and perhaps we can take some revenge.

CA, I've been watching the HWY for Ravens, but haven't seen any yet.

We also had hunters in the camps off of the end of our road, but most of them knew Buddy. He' was as friendly with them as he was with you, so I don't believe that any of them shot him. Besides they were over a mile away, and we've never had any indication that Buddy ranged that far away. In the past we had a dog that did range that way, and the guys in the camps didn't waste any time letting me know that, so I've pretty much ruled that scenario out.

Other than road kill or the wolf, the only other thing I can come up with is that someone took him.

All things considered, I'm reasonably sure that the wolf got him.

Not a hint CA.

Some of you may remember when I posted about a local trapper that caught Buddy back in 2010. I saw him last year when he was baiting bears in my area, that was right after Clarence had been killed. I warned him about the traps that the federal trapper had around so he wouldn't disturb them. I talked to that trapper on Saturday, he told me that about two weeks after I told him about Clarence last year the wolves took his Chesapeake. That trapper lives a little more than  mile away from us.

When I talked to that trapper in 2010 he told that he had a line off of the Harris road that he had to pull because the wolves kept robbing his traps. CA, just for a reference, the area we Grouse hunt at can be accessed from the North from the Harris road.

Tom, I agree, dogs don't stand a chance. Tho it would seem that for many years ole Lunker, and Clarence Maki were able to hold them at bay.

We moved here in 97 with a female lab mix named Sheba. After a close call between the wolves and Sheba in the Spring of 98 we decided to get Lunk. He was advertised as a Newfie/Shepard mix, but it was clear that he also had some Chow in him.

In the Spring of 99 we had a litter of mutts from Sheba and Lunk, Clarence Maki was the one we kept. Not wanting any more pups, we traded Sheba for Sam-E-Dog. Sam was a German Short Hair/Springer Spaniel mix that belonged to my step-son who lived in town, and couldn't keep him on a chain. Sam was quite the escape artist.

We lost Sam to the Highway around 2006. We still had Lunk, and Clarence Maki.

In the Spring of 2010 I finally had to put Lunk down. From the time we got Lunk in 98, until the Spring of 2011 we never had any issues with the wolves. I've been feeding the wolves ever since. In their prime Lunk, and Clarence Maki were 100+lbs each. For whatever reason, they kept the wolves away for a long time. Personally I believe that it was Lunks tenacity, I had many friends that wouldn't get out of their vehicles until I came outside because the way Lunk acted was so intimidating.

I have been suprised by the North West #'s. They seem to be a lot less than I thought I would see, as the area is so much larger and the quota so much higher.

TGJ,

I wonder if it has to do with the amount of territory occupied by the Red Lake and Leach Lake Bands.

I'd like to see a breakdown of those taken by hunters vs. those taken by trappers.

As I understood it, they were hoping that the proficiency of the trappers would help them reach the quota's.

When I put the dog out this morning we was standing on the deck and barking to the NE.  Late morning my wife put the dog out and saw a wolf in the backyard.  Luckily Winston had not left the deck and she got him back inside.   I went out and checked the trail cam but had no pictures.  I didn't even have pictures of the deer who left their tracks.   I made sure I turned the camera on after I put the memory card back in.

We usually see a wolf some time during the winter.  Winston will be better supervised for a while.
