Tom, even if zero PETA, and HSUS members get a tag I'll be surprised if 3/4 of the quota is met. Twolves are an awfully wily critter. I know people my age (50 years next month) and older that have never seen a wolf in the woods. I have to give them a break on the first season, but Oct 14th is an awfully late date for everyone to have to adjust their schedules if they're lucky enough to get a tag. Thus, a part of the scramble I mentioned |

Yeah I think they are getting a late jump as well. I personally am going for a late tag, I think people will be more succesfull then, when you can go out a focus on calling and hunting for them and not worry about deer hunting. I think they are banking to much on wolves just running past people sitting in their deer stands. |

I'll be applying for the second season as well.
In my area it's actually not uncommon to see wolves from your deer stand. We're the only year round residents on a mile long dead end road, but from the end of the county road, a two mile UN-maintained township road continues, and there are five camps on it. The camps add up to about 25 to 30 hunters, and someone is always seeing wolves... But... I've got a feeling that once a couple of wolves are shot at, that's going to change in a hurry.
Also, seeing wolves is one thing, actually shooting them is another. I don't consider many of those hunters to be what I would consider a good shooter. If I throw myself into the mix, only three of us reload our ammo, and we're the only three that shoot throughout the year, and practice long range shooting.
I easily see a half dozen wolves a year. Most of those encounters are at the 100yds+ range.

Here is the final word on the season Applications for Minnesota’s first-ever regulated wolf hunting
and trapping season are being taken now through Thursday, Sept. 6,
according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Individuals may apply for only one license from three available options: - Early season hunting, which runs from Nov. 3 through Nov.18 in all
Series 100 areas and Nov. 3 through Nov. 11 in Series 200 areas located
within the northwest wolf hunting zone.
- Late season hunting, which runs from Nov. 24 through Jan. 31, 2013, in all three wolf zones.
- Late season trapping, which runs from Nov. 24 through Jan. 31, 2013, in all three wolf zones.
Target harvests have been established in each of the state’s three
wolf hunting zones. If a target harvest is achieved, hunting and
trapping will be closed in that zone. The statewide target harvest is
400 wolves, which includes all three wolf zones. The lottery will award 3,600 licenses during the early season and
2,400 during the late season, at least 600 of which will be for
trapping. Application can be made at any DNR license agent, via
telephone at 888-665-4236 or online. There is a $4 application fee. All applicants must show proof of a current or previous hunting license. Lottery winners will be notified. Licenses will go on sale by Monday,
Oct. 15. Wolf licenses cost $30 for residents and $250 for
nonresidents. The statewide bag limit is one wolf. Lottery winners will receive a wolf hunting booklet with their notification. Additional information about wolves is available online.

Has anyone applied yet, when you fill out your lottery app is asks you to pick a season and they are list A, B, and C. A: is obvious because it is the only early season date but B & C are the same dates, does anyone know which is trapping and which is shooting? I want to apply for late season hunting but I am not sure which is which and I cannot find it anywhere on the DNR website. |

A two part series on hunting wolves in the lower 48 is going to be on the sportsman channel. I believe it starts on the 18th, in case anyone is interested. |

TW, I hope I guessed right. They had the seasons listed as early hunt/late hunt/late trapping. I assumed that option B was the late hunt, and applied for that option. Niemz, if the trend continues I think that everyone who applies will get a license. I was listening to NPR yesterday and they stated that just 3000 of the 6000 licenses have been applied for. I have to admit that I was pretty surprised. If you would have asked me a couple of months ago I would have guessed that about 25% of deer hunters would be applying for a wolf license. That would have been over 200,000 applicants. So much for my speculation!!! |

Lunkerdog, I applied at the DNR counter at the Fair and told him I wanted to hunt second season and he said that was the second option so you should be good. |

I joined the lottery today for the B season. I have always wanted to try hunting coyotes but with wolves in the area I was reluctant. If I succeed in the drawing I won't have to worry about miss-identification . -MD |

There was quite a rush in the last two weeks. At a glance one may think that we have about a 25% chance of getting a tag. I haven't seen the breakdown yet, but I'm Guessing (Hoping) that most of the applications are going to be for the first season. I hope those of us that applied for the second season will have better odds. |

What I don't understand is why it is going to take the computer a month to figure out who gets a license. The way I see it, deadline was the 6th give it a week for postal applicatins to come in and you should be able to have this thing figured out with 2 weeks tops. |
