I am planning my first combination woodland caribou/black bear hunt in Newfoundland Canada. I have been very successful with shooting deer with my Browning A-bolt 30-06 loaded with 52 grains of IMR 4064 powder topped with a 150 grain Nosler ballistic tip bullet. Will this load be sufficient or should I use a Nosler Partition bullet and move up to 165 or 180 grain? For optics, I have a Bausch & Lomb Elite - 3000 3X-9X 50mm scope mounter on the rifle.

Your current load is fine for Caribou. But for Black Bear I'd prefer the Nosler Partition in 180 grain.

I killed 2 caribou with 30-06 150 grain Hornady Boat Tail Spire Point bullets, and wouldn't hesitate to take bears with the same load if everything was perfect! I however would probably change to a 165 grain Partition in your situation. I tested many loads in all available bullet weights, before an elk hunt several years back. My 30-06 seems to like the 165 grainers better,so thats all I use now in it. You should have no problem at all with your current setup. |

Shoot straight, your current load works but I would go with the 180gr personnally as I believe that what Ruark left unsaid was use enuff bullet! |

I'd use a harder bullet for bear. I wouldn't worry as much about the weight on black bears |

anything from a 270 to a 338 should work fine. I would stick with your 30-06 |
