I didn't mention it in my first reply but shortgun reminded me of it.Though I use to hunt with a Super Blackhawk, now I hunt with a T/C G2 Contender. All I have to do is change barrels for different game.I can also switch it from pistol to rifle and back again.

Yep, GWB, thats why I mentioned the Savage Striker in my first post, can't change it to a rifle, but you can change barrels with relative ease, since it uses the "ugly" barrel nut system. I'm thinking about getting a .308 barrel but, right now its a .243 that is a tack driver, and its bolt action so you have the chance at a follow up shot if you do something to miss.

Thanks so much for the help all of you have given me.  Your suggestions are extremely helpful. One more question: What kind of scope would you recommend for the Ruger Super Redhawk 44 magnum and or the Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 magnum? Could you suggest power of the scope and the manufacturer.  Thanks.

I would look at both the hologram type red dot and scopes to see witch you prefer once you get the gun. I personally have a hologram type on my Redhawk in ,44 mag. and like it better than an actual scope on that gun, it's lighter and quicker target acquisition with both eyes open, plus I keep my shots close so I don't really need any magnification, and lastly it was cheap under $50. I have a Bushnell trophy series handgun model, with 2 X 7 X 32, on the Striker in .243 win that I picked up at Optics Planet for right around $125 that works very well, I replaced a $400 Burris with that Bushnell and couldn't be happier with it. They usually have very good deals on scopes, that was less than 1/2 MSRP on that scope.

Scope on a handgun has to be long-eye-relief and ought to be light enough to not make it more unwieldy. A low magnification also is all that is needed unless you are shooting one of the hand-rifles like an Encore in .308 Win or something like that. My own Super Red Hawk is toped with a Nikon 2x20mm EER scope. It is light, tought, clear and bright glass and allows me to keep both eyes open and see the crosshairs clearly at the same time.

My Redhawk is topped with a BSA 4 power, since I usually don't exceed 50 to 75 yard shots. I can't use the hologram sights, since I need magnification with my eyesight.

I carry my XD.45 with laser sight most of the time, as a back up and snake gun when I'm deer hunting.

Something I didn't see mentioned is the difference in grip shape between Ruger single action and double action revolvers !
The rounded grip frame of most single actions allows the gun to rotate/slide back in your hand, while your fingers still remain wrapped around the grip, thus lessening the felt rearward thrust ! A double action has a straighter grip and temds to push back a bit more durring recoil, thus seems to kick a bit harder.
I would suggest trying several different types and see what you like the feel of best!

mjhunting, thats a perfect example of why naustin needs to hold them, and shoot (if possible) both styles, I mentioned it on the previous page but for me its the other way around the double actions "feel" like less recoil, we are all different enough that I agree shoot both and see with you prefer. Thats all that maters once you know you have enough gun, what feels best.

mjgonehunting, That's the reason one of the first things I did to my Redhawk was to install a set of Pachmyer grips on it. I've suggested this to other people who complained about their Ruger's recoil, and every one of them have told me the same thing..........it's like a different gun in their hands.

Jeff, speaking of Pachmyer, have you seen their new product that will work on semi-auto handguns like the Springfield XD, Glock, S&W Sigma, and others that have the molded grip? It's a slip on rubber sleeve that has little soft rubber nubs (like on a steering wheel cover) on them that help relieve hand fatigue. Neat, but not cheap.

Nope unc, I haven't seen those yet, I bet they would be nice on some of the semi-auto's that have real sharp ridges on the grips, the Kal-techs for instance that tend to chew up hands though.
