Are you planting annual clover? Most Clover plots should last 3-5 years without replanting. Clover is by far one of the top perennial things to plant it is nutritious and palatable. In my opinion with as much as your planting you should be doing a variety of things. The clover is really good for spring into summer, when deer are looking for a high protein food source. Later in the year deer tend to be looking for things higher in carbs like corn and brassicas. I live Minnesota and have not had alot of luck with soybeans, but it seems I hear from people in the south it one of the most productive. If you are planting over 30 acres of plots why not try a few things and give the deer a smorgasbord?

rmason5, why don't you contact your agriculture extension office, or go by the local feed and seed store and find out what other folks in your area plant.

I just got through applying my herbicide today, and I will disc the plots in about a week. The almanac says to plant on the 21st of this month, so I plan to have everything ready for that date. I went and purchased all of my seed yesterday. I will be planting soy beans, oats, triticale, wheat, sunflowers, sorghum, clover and brassicus. This year I'm adding two additional plots which will bring my total to 9 plots with approx. 6 acres and that's on property that is slightly less than 75 acres.

Not that they would work for a food plot but I can share what the deer liked best in my friend Tom's truck garden. In one area he had early season crops planted in rows about 200' long. 3 rows of beets, 1 row of carrots, 2 rows green beans, 2 rows snow peas, 2 rows broccoli, 1 row head lettuce, 1 row romain lettuce, then a later planting of head lettuce. Once the head lettuce had started to bowl the deer had mowed them down in 4 nights then moved to the beets and snow peas. They ate the last 30' of the beets to the ground and the last 20' of the snow peas. Also only had nibbled on the romain.

Well it seems that everyone has several ideas for your food plots. Personally I recently tried Evolved Harvests' Throw and Grow blend of Brassica, Clover and Rye grass. It works amazing! I found that it worked great for the small 1/8 acre food plots that I have created between bedding areas and larger food plots. If you look on my website huntingeastcoast.com and view the game pictures you can see the deer stopped to eat this blend that I planted early last month. Check it out and I wish you the best with your plots.
