im from michigan oringinaly, i got family that just moved to kern county and were looking for open land to hunt. where can we find public hunting ground? small game, deer, ive heard alot about hog hunting, that could be fun. any info whould be great.

your in zone D 8 good hunting all over in that zone.

I shot some good Blacktails in D-5 when I was stationed there. But I also haven't set foot in the state since 1993 and don't plan on being there ever again. It kind of left a bad taste in my mouth.

D8 does have some good hunting .Your best bet is to go to the NFS and get maps from them .As far as most pig hunting it is mostly private property hunting .There is good squirrel hunting there also .And some black bear .

Not sure what part of Kern County you're in, but before moving to Missouri, I lived in the Lake Isabella area. There is some decent deer hunting in the Green Horn Mountain area north of Kernville, as well as the area east of Johnsondale. You will need to get out and do some walking, but I usually managed to shoot a deer during the season. Also good Valley quail and some Mountain quail on both sides of the Kern River. Get a Forest Service mapso you know where private property is. There is a lot of open property surrounding the lake, just watch property boundaries. Also Chukar hunting on the rocky hills around the lake and the areas east of Onyx. More hunting south of Isabella in the Piute Mountains also. Like I said, get out and figure the areas out, lot's of opportunity available. You might also talk to local F&G wardens about where to hunt. Good luck and keep us posted.
