I bought a Browning Gold 10 in 10 Ga for goose hunting. Anyone have some ideas of what ammo, shot I should use?
Last Sunday afternoon, I used it, in place of my 12 Ga, for 1 round of 5 stand. Shot 17/25. BUT, it failed to cycle 4 times. I was using Remington Nitro Steel 3 1/2" 1260 fps 1 3/4oz #2. I had some 3 1/2" 2oz #4 lead and I functioned flawlwssly.

Tom, shoulder is good. This kicks like a 308 so not bad. THat's why I got a semi auto and is a heavy gun.

Looks like the majority don"t like a good gun for geese. The barrel has little ports for gas to to cycle the chamber, check to see if they are pluged. If not , an idea is to get set of drill bits in 1000th size. Make the hole a little bigger, shot see if it cycle-try again. I had mine ported, it wouldn't cycle-called Browning they said to buy a new barrel. Gun now shot fine, just can't get size of steel I want. |

It has been my experience that rem 10 ga ammo is just bad news. Get a box of winchester black box supreme shells and you're ready to roll . |

Got a buddy that has a 10ga S/S....we sat 25 or so down at 30 yds during 5-a-day season. We come up shooting...he reaches into jacket pocket for two more rounds after first volley and loads a shell and a lip balm....neither of us got off more shots.....but we did have a good laff while picking up the seven our first five shots laid low....oh, btw I was just stroking the old 12BPS....we were both using whatever was on sale at Wally World in BB. |

HI, I'm using a Brownig Stalker 10 guage with a 26" barrel. Shot it six times and three about broke my cheek. Added a different pad and no recoil problems what so ever! A joy to shoot. I found myself flinching on the first three shots with the new pad. I used the slip over "limbsaver" pad. It's like having a marshmallow between you and the gun. About the shells. I shoot Hevi-shot and Hevi-steel. I use to reload the stuff but the shells are now cheaper. Kills like a sledge hammer hit the bird. My 12 guage Stalker loves the stuff through the reg modified choke. Pattern holds tight and dense. Ducks I can kill at 60 yards without thinking about it. Geese need to be under 50 but 40 or less is best. I have yet to chase a cripple using the Hevi-shot and that is no joke! In 5 years of using the stuff, I've never had to chase a cripple, not once, and that includes shoot Golden Eye. With good steel shells from the store (Winchester and Federal and now Hevi-metal) I can taken anything under 45 yards if I have time to pick my shot. I'm not bragging, the stuff just works. I do my part and the shells knock em out of the sky. With your 10 guage, I'd evaluate the type of shooting. Pass, or over decoys? I'd use a modified choke with 3, 1,and B. Sometimes I'll put them in my gun in that order. By the way. Hevi-shot with 1's will break human skin at 195 yards, so keep in mind who may be down range. I had to get up and move on public water a year ago when some nuts set up at a right 20% angle from center of my line of site. I would have knocked them out of their blind at 120 yards. Hope you find what your gun likes. Should be the same bore as mine but each gun seems to be different. Good Hunting in 2012! |

I use my little Mossberg model 500 .410 pump and 3" shells and kill all the close ins and fly by's ! Never have and never will understand why fellers use them 10ga cannons. |

Much of the duck and goose hunting I do is pass shooting near refuges. Opening day you can get a shot but after that if you use a 12 gauge, even with 3 inch shells, the only thing that falls is the shot. Also you may need multiple shots if you miss the first or have an opportunity for a double. A 10 will reach out and touch someone that is considerably out of range of 12 ga. Also, I find the power of a 10 results in cleaner kills using steel shot. |
