I just purchased my third muzzle loader, a finished CVA Hawken .50 caliber pistol.  I feel the gun wasn't finished correctly.  I don't have the assembly instructions for this kit gun, and I cannot find them on the internet.

Does anyone know if the wedge plates are supposed to be flush with the stock?  In my opinion, the plates are supposed to be flush -- it seems that the wedge pin is too short otherwise.

Any input is appreciated!  A link to the instructions would be most welcome!!!

on most of these guns the plates were inletted, on the kits the inlets were often but not always roughed out...depending on mfg, style and just how much work (how rough a piece it is) was involved in finishing the stock..some came with just a block of wood with a channle cut in it...other's just required a smiple sand or even minor wood carving to create the finished piece...but I'm quite sure that the plates need to be inletted and are supposed to be flush...

as seen in these pictures:

As you can see the plate is inset and flush

Thank you for the info. Looks like I have a little bit of wood working to do! Two Tales, your photo definitely shows the wedge pin going all the way through - just as I thought it should. Whoever put the gun together originally took the easy way out.

on all the kit gun I have seen, it tells you to trim or sand the wood, to make the metal parts fit properly. an exacto knife and sand paper should do the job.
