Hunting Forum

What type of dog would make the  best cat and bear dog?  I was thinking hounds but not sure.  Any help would be great.  I am a disabled vet that would like to get into cat hunting but need dogs as I am in a wheelchair and would nee dot follow on four wheeler.

Your guess to hounds is dead on. Although most people think of them as coon hunters Walkers, Redbones, Blueticks, and etc will chase cats if trained for that. I know a guy hunts fox with a Walker.

and Red Tics, Plots, Curs.....problem is Bears and cats bay where They decide to which is not necesarily ATV accessible. GOOD LUCK! And thank you for your service!

Walkers and Back n Tans work best for me. Ticks and Redbones work too but we shot our redbone cuz it wouldn't track for shit.

Nothing like bringing up a year and a half old post to peek my interest.......

WOW Shot your dog cause it would not track!!! Your an ass you could of sold the dam USELESS dog for $500.00 bucks your loss!

Baydreams07, it is nothing unusual to shoot a dog because it wont hunt. That is a common thing in south Florida when you have a trail dog that wont hunt!
Bat1342, you may want to check out a cur dog. That is one of the main dogs that are used as a traildog down here for hogs.

Along with putting old dogs down and dogs cut to heII and gone by hawgs, I have shot 3 or 4 that just would not hunt......I looked at it as not screwing up breed by letting a non-hunter get out there....

That's fine I on the other hand don't agree with the practice of shooting a dog because it is not meeting the standard of the handler.  I breed Chesapeake Bay Ret.  I make every effort to match my dogs to the needs of the buyer.  My pups are exposed to gunfire at 5 weeks as well as live birds.  the birdier dogs go to giudes and hunters the less driven go to companion homes.  just because a breed with a job is a little less driven to do it does not mean it is not worthy of being a great loving family pet to someone.  There are many things to be considered such as demeanor, and health as well.  So a Pup from impecable breeding with a loving nature needs to be SHOT because it is not a hunter!!!!  I totally disagree!  JMO

Does anybody else think that "BIG BROTHER" might be monitoring this thread? Not that I care or would say anything, but it is err animal abuse...I think I would keep this on the down-low..just saying is all IMO..good luck

If this is directed to me I am not "BIG BROTHER" I just don't agree with the practice of shooting a worthy dog because it has not met expectations of a "certain" person.  As far as animal abuse that's exactly what it is when there are so many more options!  As far as keeping it on the down low that needs to be changed to that it's a low down thing to do!

New here but not hiding anything! Including my Opinion!
