I have taken quite a few with my 30-06, probably too much gun for them but never had one get away.

going back to South Carolina next October will be using my browning A Bolt in 300win mag. 180 grain Accua Tip in front of IMR 4350, this should be adaquit for a hog.

IF I'm out stalking around the timber for hogs I'd rather have my
Blackhawk .45 Cot with hardcast SWC's 300gr.
IF sitting in a stand as I was last July in Fla.  used my 700 in .243
and found it was more than equal to the two boars I head shot
with it.  DRT & kicking at the shots, both of 'em.
The biggest, 200# stood staring at me for at least two minutes
while I was trying to see the spot I wanted to hit with the 6x.
Had too much glass for the short range.  Filled the scope with a
black blur too big to and blurred to really tell what I was looking for.
Did the job though. Next time I'll use a less powerful scope though.
Wish you well, best of luck at the hog killin games!

The place we go has shots out to 300 yards. we also plan on going for elk, that is why we bought the .300 win mags. And besides you are right the .300 makes them too dead.

Weatherby .308 Redfield 3-9x40 scope. Great gun and kills practically anything. I want to try that new Razorback XT round from Winchester.

I use a 30-06 or a .300 Savage 165 grain on both. They both work extremely well.

I just harvested one last week. I used my Remington 7mm mag, which did a great job and dropped it in its tracks.

I have killed them with a .22LR bolt action, 30/30, Swede 6.5X55, .44 mag with scope, and my Barnett Quad 300 crossbow. Hogs are no harder to kill than whitetail deer. Any centerfire rifle or big bore handgun will penetrate even the so called " armor " on their front shoulders and with the .22LR I put the round in their ear. All other shots are tight in and under the first leg joint down from the shoulder. Most here killed by my fellow Georgians are killed using the .22 but a lot of out of towners always bring firearms that I consider big bear medicine. The same apply's to hogs as any other animal and that of course is bullet placement with the correct bullet.

I agree bigdawg...a .22 will do the job...i normally get them with a .30 carbine.....but whats up with the .44mag.."with a scope?"    Thats weird..... always shoot straight...in my house...we take care of intruders with the .44.....its all good...i just think maybe you could use something smaller....hmmm....a .357   lmao

Use whatever you use for your deer rifle. But hogs can be pretty tough so you might want to use a 30 caliber or up.

Is it just me or does anyone else have several hunting firearms/bows and try to take each type of big game with each? In other words, after I dropped a feral hog with the Rem 700 in .270 I did not take that rifle out for hogs until after I used the Mauser in 7x57, the Mauser rechambered in 7.62 Nato, the Rem 700 in .300 WinMag, the Ruger 77 in 6.8 SPCII, the Mossberg 500 12 gauge, the .44 Mag Redhawk, the compound bow and where legal the AR in 6.8 SPCII. The same thing with deer and now starting the IMO much more difficult task with elk. After ( IF ) can manage that task it will be time to pick up a different caliber or crossbow and proceed taking everything with that, just to repeat again and again.

That leads me to ask if anyone has an opinion of what big game caliber should I try next or if a crossbow would be better.

30-06 with a Winchester 150 gr ballistic silvertip. This combo will kill anything man. But as always, shot placement is key. Happy hunting!!
