Depends. If your chasing them through the woods you probably want something like a 30-30 with open sights. If you're using dogs go with a .45 pistol. If you're sitting in a stand use your deer rifle. Don't forget about your bow either!

I prefer the Tikka Hunter in 6.5x55 with my special handloaded Norma 156 grain Alaska bullet, I do carry a Ruger Redhawk in .45 Colt with a 260 grain keith style bullet in my handload for backup. Only have used the handgun for finishing shot never needed it becuase of rifle load failure, I am going to trymy Remington model 700 in 8MM Mauser with a handloaded 196 Grain NOrma Alaska this year I will keep you posted

A 30/30 or a 45/70 lever gun is great, a colt 45 pistol for up close and personal should be good. I prefer bigger but what ever you feel comfortable with but

I would suggest something with a short barrel thats why I like the levers for that type of hunting. Good luck

Last weekend while hunting turkeys around home I saw a boar that made me wish I had my 444 marlin ,the load of #4's in my 12ga felt real puny . When I first saw his back moving through the brush ,I thought it was a deer being so high from the ground and my .44 S&W wasn't much comfort .

Rifle: the heavier bullets in almost any caliber; My Pets are CZ 550 6.5x55 (160 gr), BLR 358 Win (225grNP), Gewehr 98/41 35 Whelen (250 gr), Husqvarna '96 9.3 x 57 (250, 270 gr), Marlin or H&R 45-70 (405 grJSP), Rossi Win '92 clone 454 Casull (300grJHP), H&R 500 S&W (350 gr JSP). Note that all run in the 2000-2550 fps range to limit meat damage.
Handgun: Red/Blackhawk 44 Mag (250 gr NP), Blackhawk 45 Colt (260grJHP), Raging Bull 454 Casull, (330 LSWC)
However, when I'm in a highly controlled setup, like an elevated stand over bait, I may pick anything the has enough precision for a head shot, using the toughest bullet available, like a Barnes 53 gr TS in my CZ 527 in .223.

A lot of well meaning hunters are using large caliber rifles and heavy bullets. I have been shooting hogs for a long time. I use a 308 with 125 grain Sierra. This is more than adequate for even the largest of hogs provided that a below or straight into the ear hole is the target. Shooting the shoulder is not the best and surest way to kill a hog. Unless you like to trail and follow up a wounded hog. The target doesn't know that you are aiming and shooting a light bullet. DRT is what you will get with the ear shoot. Track , and track, and still not hog to be found.

Straight shooting and BBQ is one the way

My go-to hog-hunt rifle is a Marlin .45-70 with hot handloads (just because I can), but sadly I admit as to never having shot one.  Been there when they were shot by others and drew a bead on a 200 pounder last year but held my fire at first because my partner was ahead of me and already unloading his .30-30 into it.  When I reached a spot where I could draw a bead on it again it turned and ran out of sight just as I started to aim.  The dogs and my partner caught up to it and finished it off moments later.  When using dogs in the mts there is no way to reliably take time to aim at an ear or even think you can get a perfect standing broadside.  Those things are moving fast, bounding over stuff, ducking under stuff, and generally trying to make your nano-second shot window more like the bouncing rabbit sporting clays game.  Better hit them with something that either cripples them or leaves enough blood for you to follow or you won't be dragging them out.  Dernit, got me al excited reliving some of my experiences up there and now I want to go!  Just 5 months to go...

Any deer rifle will do just fine if you hit them in the right spot, which is further foward than it is with a deer. But, I like my DPMS Panther LR-308, with a 19 round clip, so I can hit a bunch of them in the right spot!

I have only harvested a few hogs so far. The 1st was with a Rem 700 bdl in .270 win winchester super x rounds, quartering away shot. Shot dropped him instantly, through the both lungs and heart and destroyed the far shoulder. The 2nd was not planned, he almost walked in to me while I was turkey hunting with a Mossberg 500 12 gauge. 3 rounds of 4 shot dropped him in a few yards, rifled slugs worked much better for the 3rd hog! I always take a .44 mag redhawk and a successfully placed between the eye hit landed #4. From that limited experience I would say my prefered weapon depends on the amount of ground cover. More wide open would mean the .270, more brush means the 12 gauge with slugs and always the .44 as a back up.
