been wanting to do this for a while now. never had the chance before last night. either too late/dark when I shot/found the deer, or didn't have a camera with me. it is not the greatest video in the world, but you can see most of the basics on what to do. sure there are other ways to gut a deer, but this is for me the fastest and easiest. remember when I first started hunting, passed up a lot of shots because I didn't know what to do when the deer was down. so, if one youngster learns something, then it will be a good thing. and yes, this was approved by the admin's here. WARNING!!! PARENTS - ADULTS - you may want to watch this BEFORE you let your younger ones watch it. as with gutting all animals, there is blood, and of course, guts in it. http://s841.photobucket.com/albums/...375AVI.mp4diet dew is optional in the pocket........... |

That's a great instructional video for anyone new to it Todd . How come we can't figure out how to not get blood on the pants though ? I still end up with it too . |

TLC there was a post hear in early November, someone was asking how to gut a deer. It's the only post they've made but maybe they'll drop in and view your video.
The "how to" part reminded me of my first deer. I had only seen it done once the season before, and didn't make it past the diaphram. My Grandfather had to come out and show me how to finish the job.
It's nice in this day and age that you can post a training video like that, and new hunters can view it a few times before they go hunting.

Good Video! I got help on my first one and after that I was on my own. You can also go to youtube and find some other good ones (and some bad ones). I would also HIGHLY recommend using a Buttout for the first step in the video and it saves a bit of time. |

Mark, have no idea how to keep that from happening. pant covers like I have on my arms?
cbrown. the problem I have found with the butt out thing is that deer are not a one size fits all deal. bought one, and the damn thing got stuck inside a smaller deer. talk about playing hell with something.
Dana. get yourself some gutting gloves. they go up the arms to the shoulders, and then you can put the rubber gloves over those. nice thing about these things are that they can be worn over your normal gloves. can keep your hands warmer while gutting that way. one other suggestion. get yourself one of those lights that clip to the bill of a ball cap. they are adjustable and work great for gutting critters in the dark. that way, you can use the flashlight to scan for other incoming critters. |

Great Vid ! The very first instruction on a field dressing video should be REMOVE YOUR WRISTWATCH ! I've been gutting deer for 40 years and still forget! But an old toothbrush works great for scrubbing the blood and fat out of the groves! I recomend using the guy who didn't keep up his end of the deer camp chores toothbrush! |

Maybe I'm wrong but I didn't think you were supposed to kneel down the the blood and guts, I kinda try and avoid that type of maneuver because it really sucks when it's about 12 degrees outside! But then again If I got down on my knees I more then likely would need a crane to get back up, so maybe that's why I don't! lol |

I hunted with a group that brought their deer to camp before field dressing them. They would come in, hang the deer, then go into the camp house and drink coffee or eat then sit around shooting the bull for an hour or two. Sometimes it was half a day before they got around to gutting the deer. The firse time I was standing close when they opened the cavity I almost threw up. I always gut the deer as soon as I can and if you havent shot the stomach of intestines there is no objectionable oder. Wait several hours and let it bloat and the smell will be awful!! The other problem was they hauled all the waste to one place in the area and you could smell it for half a mile. Even coyotes stayed away from that area. When you field dress the deer close to where you killed it, the gutpile will be gone the next day. |

Yuk , I always gut it where it fell ASAP , and split the rig cage and pelvis at the truck . Long drags leave you with all kinds of stuff on the meat if you split it in the field . RHenshaw I would love to see you make a video on "stand up field dressing in the woods" .LOL |

Here is how I do it..I go out see the deer move into position shoot the deer..wait a bit go to the deer, get out the cell phone call son..sone comes feild dresses it drags it to the truck, loads it , take deer to house son unloads it hangs it up and then I skin it and cut it up...it is so much easier that way ... Nice video...did one a few years ago myself...helped to have a film crew to shoot it...got some inclose point of view shots... |

As the others have said, this is a great video. We have been using the butt-out device for the past few years and have had great success with it, can see where it would really mess things up if it got stuck, though. I concur with your not spliting through the brisket until the animal is either on a vehicle or back in camp as the smaller hole you have, the less debris you introduce to the cavity. I usually wait until we have the deer hung to complete the removal of the windpipe, just cut it as far up in the cavity as I can reach then when we get the animal skinned, we open the throat to make sure that we get all of the windpipe removed. Thanks for sharing, will send this to son for the granddaughter to look at, should provide some good insight to her. |

There is also a great video on youtube on how to get the meat off the deer once you get it hung up, man thats the way Iplan on doing it, it was quick and there wasn't nothing left. This guy is good. As far as the Buttout, I have used it on yearling all the way up to my 11 pointer this year with great sucess. Some of them you have to pull harder. |

My Dad always taught me to remove the glands from the hind legs, these are the sent glands that the deer piss on to put down the scrapes, he always said that if touched and then touch the meat it would infect it. Otherwise I do the same except I cut the windpipe and then open the deer up and proceed. |
