This was posted in the Wisconsin forum from a member looking for help. After posting my response,I took the liberty to copy and paste her message here. It is as follows:
Hello WI Hunters!!!
My co-worker's 11 year old son has told his mom that he wants to send gift packages over to the troops instead of getting gifts himself (he really wants to be a marine when he graduates).
Can anyone provide me with addresses to send packages to?
Thanks in advance!
Mrs. Elkhunter
I'm sure you vets can help direct her and am so proud of the youths intentions.

It's a shame that all of us vets that did our part to protect this country over the years cannot offer 1 bit of guidance to help this woman/child support us.(Veterans, past and PRESENT.) Could it be that we are not as supportive/protective as we thnk we are? Christmas IS for kids, and this "Kid" wants to return it to the troops! Why arent we helping this kid? |

I'm impressed with that young man though and I hope he will always have a great sense of honor. |

As was already said, Christmas is for kids. I can think of no sewrvice member who would accept a gift in lieu of this young man getting one. They are just not built like that. His heart is in the right place for sure. |

I don't know any one who would send their address, because we are not built like that. There are local organizations, churches, etc, who are sending thank you packages to service members over seas. I received cards, letters, and packages while I was in Iraq, and Afghanistan. Contact your local Guard unit, and ask them where you could send gifts, valentine cards etc. Thank you for serving those who serve. I know each time I received a package or letter it made me proud to be doing what I was doing. Patch |

I wish more kids were like this one, most aren't as thoughtful of others these days. I am the comander of our local VFW post in SW Wisconsin. I know if he contacted his local VFW post they would be more than happy to help him out. The post might even take care of the shipping costs so he could afford to donate more if he wished. I know our post did something similar. we had local people that donated numerous items and we paid for the shipping. We have a current post member that is stationed in the middle east so they all went to her command. if I remember right we shipped 25-30 large boxes of goods. another bonus of getting ahold of an organization would be to get a list of wanted care package items. i know one popular item most dont think about is alcohol whips! hope this helps, and if youneeds further info please feel free to email me at chadchappell@yahoo.com put NAHC VET in the subject box as i do get a lot of junk email..... |

very impressed they should give him a medal on the topic at hand , the red cross would be a good place to start , recuirt stations, or contact your nearest military installation all of these are good places to start, this kid has a bigger heart and soul than most grown floks that is truley sad |

As i read this I am really glad there are young hunters wanting to join the miliarty that gives me hope that my young son and daughter will join the hunting and miliarty groups, I do not have an answer for your question but if you call the local red cross they will be able to direct you in the right direction, most of the WI troops are home at this time but there are more deyploying in the next year, if he wants to wait. |

The best way I can think of is to get on the Any Marine Website. I am currently in Afghanistan, but I get to go home in the next month. While I have been out here we receive packages from Any Marin Mail all of the time. The way it works is you go to the website and find the name of the Marine you want to send packages to. The names on the website are all Marines that are currently forward deployed. It also isn't support for just that individual Marine, a lot of the names are unit leaders of some type and it list the number of marines he or she has contact with. If you would like to choose another branch of the service there are also links for any soldier, any sailor, any airman, and any coast guard. Any way you choose the person or unit you wish to send a package to and you can get their address from the website. Here is the link to the Any Marine page: http://anymarine.com/index.cfm |

My friend Ray's son Jason had a friend in the sandbox a couple of years ago and he said one thing they like was "Silly String", said you could spray that into a room and it would hang on tripwires. A thought although I have had no direct information on the matter. I presume that would be of most interest to those who would bet doing entries into buildings. Ray said that in Viet Nam they used monkeys to go ahead of them on the trails, they would scamper along and when they came to a wire they would stop and look it over, telling the guys where it was. |

Contact any Military Recruitment station, Reserve or National Guard unit in your area... They generally can give you the address or contact person who can help. As far as WHAT to send - again contact your local Point of Contact... I spent 22 years in the Air Force and served my time in Sand Land... we often asked to things like Condoms or balloons to cover the barrels with to keep sand out... writing tablets, pens, pencils, anything that is difficult to get and can be easily put into a backpack or ruksak. |
