The information alone on any subject with hunting, magazines and the seldom, but a bonus if you get it free item, is worth the membership i think. If you dont get anything out of this club and just joined for the free stuff, then yes your probably gonna get your heart broken!

I wanted the magazine.   I figured 60 years of magazine would more than pay for the couple hundred bucks the life membership was.  The gun case the vest and a few other cheezy items that came with it just made it seem a little less expensive for me.  The gun case is nice.  The reversible vest I use all the time.  And I gave some other stuff away.  Anyway the way I figured it.  I got a life subscription to a hunting magazine for a fraction of what it would have costed if I did it yearly.

2links, you joined for the right reason!! The mag. subscription, like you said, is where the value lies. The site is a little extra added bonus, the info gleaned from the site is priceless.

How can I complain?

When we had the chat and the subject came up of lack of free stuff, I would turn red with shame because it seemed the club was always sending me cool and useful stuff.  Why I just got a pair of nice warm mittens sent to me by the club a couple months ago.   Just in time for the cold weather hunting, I love them.  I'm still waiting for that ATV or sweet Muzzle Loader but heck you just never know, guess time will tell.

Most of all I've met cool and useful friends, folks who've given me helpful hunting tips, let me vent when I missed a critter, given me an understanding ear when things were going bad in my life and shared my joys to boot.

Those are the things that have made the club...the club for me, way more then the stuff.

DarkAngel, I don't mean to sound sexist here, but when you compare your picture to most of the rest of us, there may be a reason you get freebies and we don't!!!!!

I have been a life member for a little over 5 years now and on multiple occasions I have thought that if it wasn't such a waste of money I would cancel my membership just to prove a point. I do like the message boards but lets be honest I can go to a thousand places on the internet and talk with like minded people. I think the magazine is OK but I am mostly a duck hunter so all I have to look forward to every year is the one issue a year where they talk about my primary hunt because almost every other issue is packed full of usefull deer hunting knowledge (in between the thousands of ads). As far as the product testing goes it is obviously a very well planned Advertising gimic to get people to join and it has been a huge let down every year, and I have never recieved anything of any real value or worth in the field. (yes I get a test every year because I ride them like a rented mule till I get one.) They have often tried to trick me into not getting them anymore by sending the wrong forms over and over and then claiming that I never did the review so I would no longer be eligible to test products. The email customer service is horrible!!!! It seems like they pick a form letter and send it, I don't think that I have ever been treated more poorly by a group that I have paid and belonged to for so long. The contests I see on the website never seem to change, and I am beginning to think that the names of the winners are just made up so that someone doesn't try and sue them for something. By this point no one is left reading but if you are don't bother with the North american fishing club or the trophy or duel membership thing they are trying to sell you it is all a way to get back into your wallet. As a matter of fact, if you are thinking of becoming a member of those you should send me the money and I will buy a lottery ticket and split the money with you. In this case you would have much better odds of being satisfied.

Well i guess i dont understand, if someone has been a member for any amount of time they can( you would think)be able to figure out if they like it or not. so being unhappy and dishing out useless money for somthing you`ve hated for years, than its nobodys fault but your own

It's really touigh to think of it as a "club".  Using the term club is a joke.  I traveled 19 states in 2010 and advertised in the forum section my desire to find places to hunt along the way. I only had one offer from a member in Maine.
I had better luck on craigslist.

I always got a lot of free stuff. It was always really cheap things to test and always when I couldn't use it like rut scent strips in February and mosquito repellant in December.

I joined the club back in 85 and became a Lifer in 88.  It was a great club back then and I had hopes it would get better over time.

Alas, that is not the case.  It has morphed into a big business, with the people at the top and in management, having huge budgets and elaborate perks.  If this were a club, we could elect the top people to represent the rest of us, and they would be there because they represent the rest of us as we feel our leaders should.  They would be expert hunters with integrity and humility.  They would also be skilled at public relations, involved in pro-hunting and pro-gun causes and highly respected by the general public at large.

But it is not a club.  We are simply members of a business enterprise that charges us a fee to join.  We have no say in it's direction or it's mission.  We are not respected as members, only welcomed as revenue producers.  Our numbers are used to sell advertising and mailing lists, in order to increase the profits.  The NAHC has become a huge machine that has forsaken what it was originally intended to be.

You still get the magazine as compensation for your dues, but even that has tons of advertising and too little substance.  The editorials are usually fluff pieces and many of the articles aggravate me for various reasons.  Rarely do I read something that enhances my hunting ability, or tells me anything I don't already know.

But I'm a Lifer, and my dues will not be refunded.  So I consider it my duty to inform the NAHC of my disatisfaction at every opportunity with the hope one day they may actually care to listen and make this club what it could, and should be, in the future.  A club that would make all of us proud to be members, proud to be hunters and proud to be a part of.

Smith, if you fell for the free stuff trap and that's all you're looking for....well, ya waisted your money. I joined 4 yrs ago. Got the 3yr membership, and after meeting the people here, I did the life member thing. Now they want me in the "trophy" membership, but they aint gettin another dime for that. I saw the trophy gift pack and to be honest, I can buy the same or better at Wally World for 1/4 of the price. I really don't care about the mag. It's more than 3/4 advertising and has very little usefull content. And I'm really getting tired of BM's bragging about all the trips he goes on, on our $. I have recieved some free stuff. Mostly garbage, rust inhibitor strips and some shoot n see targets (WOOHOO) but I did get a new pair of 1200g Danner Pronghorn hunting boots just before hunting season! Between the boots and the stuff I got for the life membership, I guess I got my money's worth. To me though, it's the members. If I have a question about something involving hunting, or shooting, this is a great place to be.

Mr VJP, the NAHC is a clone of the US Government. We hear a lot of promises, we pay a lot of $, but we only get a load of sheit!!!!!!

Mr VJP I have to agree and add that the magizine is more like a promo for the big wigs. Look at me! See where I went! Look what I did!! Who makes the rules for this club? Who hires these people? Who is the president and how did he get the job? Why the heck do they get to go on all the trips while we pay the bills? Oh ya!! Cause we let them get away with it!!

I love the responses from those of you who think we should just "drop out" if we don't like it. That's not easy to do if you joined as a Life Member.
I wrote Bill Miller and he never even had the decency to have his secretary respond much less do it himself. He must have been too busy traveling the world.
I've had stories published in the magazine, I've had my pictures in there quite a few times but it's not a "club", it's really just an innovative way to sell magazines, products and advertising. It is what it is.

Getting tired of getting sent mail from other sources that just want more money every week can't support them all. Never did till I signed up for NAHC, and not reading any promising comments about testing. Probably won't extend my membership. Anyone else feel the same?

jyak722, welcome to the "club"!!!!!! Just don't do what most of us have already done, and shell out the money to become a Life Member, and don't expect anything, then you won't be dissapointed! Enjoy the mag, and the board, since that's where the true value is with this company!!!!!!
