Good morning vets. I to am a disabled vet who recently had quite an experience at the VA hospital in Lebanon, Pa. I was walking down a hallway suffering with a stress fracture to the foot when I came upon a vet in a wheelchair. He asked me to give him a push I thought this is good it gives me something to hang onto as I was going the same direction. After what seemed to be about a 1/4 mile we came to a door leading outside, not handicap accessible. I managed to get him out the door only to find it was raining.  There stood a little building partially enclosed . By then I had to ask what our you coming here for the response of course an evil cigarette. Outrage ran through me as I knew now this poor man to have a smoke had to go close to half a mile round trip just to smoke a cigarette. While waiting at the next line to get services I was relaying the story to fellow veterans when a woman piped up he shouldn't be smoking anyway those things will kill you. Seeing red now as I lit into her with I guess it wasn't dangerous when at 18 years of age they stuck a gun in are hands and sent us far away to kill people we didn't no. Now we can't smoke a dam cigarette because of the same government that did this to him  says cigarettes are dangerous. You could have heard a pin drop. Just thought you would enjoy this little story. Light em up if you have em.

Hi, I am also a disabled vet from 20+ years of svc. I was 80% and then i had things go wrong and they gave me unemployablility at 100%, funny, the same things I got 80% for made me unemployable. Anyway I have more and more trouble getting around and I am stil l young at 52. Anyway, I live in NW MT and I have a hard time getting to the elk so i hunt from my back pasture. I went to eastern MT elk hunting a couple weeks ago and my leg locked up and I barely made it back to the truck where my hunting partner was waiting so I think my days of hunting, walking, anyway are numbered. The VA finally took xrays and I have a torn cartilege in my kne. I am looking for a place that allows disabled vets to hunt so if anyone knows of such a place let us know. I did find a ranch that allowed purple heart recipients to hunt and only them, but I never got a purple heart, I was wounded by friendly fire. Glad to see so many on here.

Does agent orange count as friendly fire?

To Pegleg1,
unfortunately, the VA barely acknowledges that Agent Orange even exists.  They begrudgingly add certain diseases to the list of ailments caused by AO, but to claim them, you have to have had 'boots on the ground' in 'nam, even if your boots were only on the ground for a few seconds.  They don't even acknowledge that perhaps thousands of us worked, shipped, sprayed, and cleaned spraying equipment who were not 'boots on the ground'.  We just lose out.[script removed]

I just found this page. Don't get on the computer much. I'm 30% connected from nam, neck injury. Still able to function pain don't bother me much I've been dealing with it for 35 years. koodles to all my brothers in arms. I live on the banks of the wabash river in west central indiana. 1/2 mile from the illinois state line. home of some record whitetails. Proud to be a member of this club. Hope to get to meet some fellow brothers and hunters. I help out at the local Legion and VFW. We have a few hunters that need help hunting and am glad to help.

It should not be boots on the ground,it should be ' AO in the air' I've got a claim I was ' Brown water Navy' but I agree there was a lot of people exposed that weren't in country or they were ' Blue water Navy' There was one blue water sailor that took it to court and won. But the VA said "that doesn't mean they all get it". But it should.

ive had no trouble with the va they helped me out a lot i was exposed to ao just like other nam vets im rated at percent disability this came on my first application for compensation they have relaxed some of the requirements for compensation recently you still must meet their standards but the paperwork is a lot easier to perform did you file your claim yourself or did you have someone like the vfw or american legion help you in my county we have a service officer you sign over to him to be your person to fight for you they no all the paperwork and forms needed they were a good help in my getting my compensation dont try alone the va and their paperwork will overwhelm you let your service fight for you hank k

Hi there, I too am a 100% Disabled Vet,,I retired from Air Force and FROM my 21 yrs in, my spine went to hell and now I live with severe non-stop chronic pain, 24/7 and nerve damage.  I haven't been able to hunt for several years as I can't walk very far with my leg brace and/or cane,,,,I am soooo glad there are more of us on here, as I tell you what,,,SOME days, it bugs me alot to know I served 21 yrs etc and ended-up like this,,,,would do it again,,but still, it bugs me at times as most of my retired vet friends are financially set for life now or doing great and I NOT.  Any of you fellow Disabled Vets,,,,ones like me with non-stop chronic pain that is unrelenting,,and others for other problems, WE are not alone, we have EACH OTHER regardless when we served or for how long,,fact is,,,we ARE brothers and we SERVED.  Peace and thank you my veteran brothers for what you also sacrificed and to those who sacrificed BEFORE I joined in 1980,,because of you, I was ABLE to join and do my 21 yrs,,even though my body hates me now, haha.  Peace.  Ed

Hi there, no I think it is still not allowed, as far as hunting from vehicle, but will double check. Where in PA are you,,as I am originally from a small town in NE PA, in coal mining town called Shamokin. Yea, severe chronic pain is hideous...but after my last "failed spinal surgery" I am grateful the doc didn't lie to me,,he did say,,,"Ed, unfortunately, you are one of the 1% that is just screwed as your spine looks like coral and the hardware won't hold and you will be in severe pain rest of your life and will end-up in a wheelchair. I said HELL NO I will not,,,so I have to wear 3 different braces to get around and a cane when I use only some of the braces. I guess the good thing is that when he said I would be on pain meds for life, I QUIT social drinking as I will NOT and will NEVER mix pain meds with booze,,,I know meds won't take away the pain and after 8 yrs, I know this is true and I know,,that pain means I am not dead....but why speed up the clock by drinking and taking meds, ya know....and I STILL after all this time,,still ONLY take my meds how prescribed, I still will NOT take more. OHHHHHH,,anyone on long term meds of any kind,,,,you need to buy Milk Thistle from like Wal-Mart,,,,in the beginning of me living on pain meds JUST to be able to move,,,my liver tests started showing up bad,,,but after 3 months on Milk Thistle capsules (a natural weed) my liver tests came back PERFECT, so been taking them now 3 times a day for years. Milk Thistle flushes out toxins from your liver......please check it out as I am living proof it works and now the base I retired from is gonna stock it in their pharmacy formulary so it can be given out to patients that take meds long term, but its cheap in store. Nice to meet you sir.

I m a disabled vet served in Korea, I took 40 years before the VA would give me a 100% classfication but Here in Oregon we do get a lot of benifits I believe Pekleg mentioned most of the benifits but left out the big one. If you draw a bull elk tag and you have a Oregon disabled permit you are able to shoot a cow or calf. In other words the good meat. My preference is a your two year old cow that is just before she is old enough to breed. I have been a life member since 1991, a life member of the NRA, The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. Central Oregon Shooting Sports Association. I have to be a little careful with my health as I had Triple by Pass Surgery one year ago this April. Have been a hunter since I was 12 years old. I want to thank all of you for serving this great country of ours. We know freedom is not FREE. However I m afraid due to things beyond our control there are those that do not understand that.

Hello Vetrans I'm 100% Disabled myself I did 20 years in my BELOVED U.S. NAVY (then they said no more) so I had to go. I was a Boatswainmate for 14 years converted to Master-At-Arms then they sent me to the only shore duty I ever had at Tinker Airforce Base in Oklahoma City! It was Ok but I sure whished I was back at sea duty I did 13 ships in all 12 amphips and Minesweeper. I whish they would have a hunt for Vets. When I was in the Navy they gave me the name "REDDOG" my real name is Stacy Reddig if anyone remembers me e-mail me ssreddig@yahoo.com

Hello brothers, I'm Jim Wasneechak. A 20+ yr Army Retiree, with a VA rating of 100%disabled/unemployable. Currently live in El Paso, Tx, but originally from Upstate NY (white tail country). I too have had 3 spinal surgeries for injuries incurres in Central America. VA referred me to a civilian DR. who just told me one of my vertebrae has shifted and will have to be fused. Can't walk w/o a cane, and had to forfiet my$100 deposit on a bow hunt for Javelinas (wild pigs). Texas, like a lot of States, has a generous hunting license deal for 60% and up disabled vets. The bad thing is there's no where to hunt, that doesn't cost you an arm and a leg. Spring turkey for example, will end up costing you over $400/Tom! That doesn't take gas ,food, and, in some cases lodging, into consideration. If anyone knows of any diabled veteran friendly hunting land/land owners in West Texas, that understand our financial situation. Let me know. jrwas7315@aol.com P.S. Pain Meds don't work anymore, but thank God for the Head meds.

Hi jsupulver.  I live in Tx as well, and have 100% VA disability fo spinal injury from a fall outta a helo while night rappelling back in '84.  Tx is great for 60+% disabled vets as far as free licenses, no property taxes, free disabled license plates...  However, try and use your free license for hunting, and you have to pay exhobitant landowner fees, land leases, even pay per point on on a white tail rack that can run $200+/ point!  I'd love to get together with a group of Veterans and purchase a few thousand acres here, and let non vets pay the big prices while the Veterans hunt for free.  Just an Idea for my bucket list.  Tx is a great state, but ,Right NOW, Too expensive to hunt.

I spent 19+ in the USAF as a Command and Control member and lost my retirement. Looks like 100% in the future. 16 knee operations one back and booth worse than ever. Developed RSD after a knee replacement. Nam vet who has been hunting and fishing for close to 50 years. Love waterfowl and pheasant hunting a great deal. Hard to wade now but pick my spots carefully. Big game harder to do in NM because of the mountains and my lifting limit. Still enjoyed traveling the world and miss the service. Jess
