In the 270, I've been working with Hornady 140 BTSP's and Reloder 17.  I used to use Speer 130 BTSP and IMR 4350 but am  tired of the big chunky powder that doesn't flow through the measure.

I'm right around an inch for 3 shots @100, just playing a bit with the seating depth.  I don't know if I'll get any across the chrono this year but they should be moving right along.  Alliant felt 52.7 was a safe upper end, I stopped at 52.5 gr.

I heard from Shovel today and he asked me to say hi to you guys for him.  Here's his email:

I haven't been to the club for a bit because of the medical probs... neck just drops me down. I don't know how much hunting I am going to do this year with the neck hurting so bad. I wanted to to do the trap shoot at the union picinic but thought better of it. Just shooting the .22 hurts bad enough. This SUCKS!!! I have been so looking forward to the early musket hunt but don't know if that is going to happen unless I use a light load and the .270 is out and have to resort to the .223 for this years rifle hunt,  even if they let me do that. I have been cutting some fire wood on the weekends but only for limited amounts of time. I just thought I would let you know what has been going on and let the gents know at the club as well.

Good Luck to everyone that is heading out in the woods on Saturday for opening day of Archery and hope the monster of a live time is within your shooting range and you make the best shot of your life. I'm heading up to PA on that day and wont get there till Sunday. No hunting for me till i return from Canada on the 16th and then all hell will break loose. The in-line and croobow are ready to go. Since Philly is in the playoffs and the Braves are not, i'm buying all nite. My report wont be until my return on Nov the 5th. Stay Safe Everyone.

I made it in gents. Just to drop a note to let everyone know that I am still kicking. I am waiting on a Dr's appointment to get some minor surgery done to remove some cyst, one they think is causing alot of my problems in the neck.

I hope you all enjoyed the first day of archery. I am not sure I would have seeing that it rained and was quite cold for the 1st of October. It is supposed to warm up later in the week and be nice on Saturday. Well anyway shoot straight and make a clean kill.

I will take you up on the drinks DS but only a couple...pain med kick my but if I have more than that.

Stay dry and be safe.

dk, like you, I moved up from a 130 to a 140 grn bullet but I went with the Nosler Balistic Tip the 1st year they came out. I also tried and had great results with the 140 Nosler Accubond. I found all 3 of our 270s (2 Rem 700s and 1 Win M 70 ) like 51 grns of IMR 4350 for both bullets.. My older brother started using 4350 back in the 60s, his best load using a Speer manual( I still have it) was 54.5 grns with a 130 FB spitzer. Funny, but back then they list 52....... 56 grns of 4350 (no prefix) for that bullet. No listing for a 140 bullet back then.
I still use IMR 4350 in the .22-250 and the 7mm-08. I know..... BUT " IF IT AIN'T BROKE......"
gully, still haven't heard from our little buddy. As for NC, I have to pass on that one. Thanx for the invite though.
DK, haven't been out with the bow yet this year. Gearing up for the youth pheasant hunt this coming week and the the early smoke pole season after that. Then it'll be BOW time.
Shovel, glad to see you're still kicking and can still type. Hope your surgery went well.
Drinks on the snake. Hope the Phils end it tonight.

Since I had new barrel to work up, I figured I might as well take advantage of the temperature tolerance and easier metering of some of the new powders. Back in the 70's when I started loading, 140 gr bullets didn't exist for the 270, you went with 130 or 150.

In the 60's, I don't think there was any other 4350 besides the one from IMR. Thus no prefix. H 4350 and Accurate 4350 are relatively recent introductions.

Back in the early 60s, my older brother bought a M70 Win .270, which he gave to my oldest son about 15 yrs ago. It's one of the .270s I reload for now. Anyway, he used to correspond using letters with, the famous "wildcatter", P. O. Ackley,( I think he was the Shooting Editor or somthing for Outdoor Life mag back then) and they became quite chummy. Old P.O. gave him a load for Elk, my brother used on hunts in Colorado and Wyoming. It was 53.5 grns of 4350 behind a 150grn Nosler Partition. He stuffed 4 or 5 boxes but only used less than a box during those western hunts. I ended up with 3 of those boxes, and used them during the 70s, 80s, and early 90s on deer, until I used them all up. That load was devastating, especially if you hit the opposite shoulder. Now, I really like the Nosler 140s.  Mucho less meat damage.

It's early but I'll have one. Taking a break from putting the storm windows in while getting snowed on so I'll have something warming, like an Irish coffee. I should have done the windows last evening but went to the range instead. You've got to set your priorities, right? Stay warm and dry, take it easy shoveling the white stuff.

Skwirl, congrats on the smoke pole kill, 133 lb dressed is a toad around here, probably one of the matriarchs of the deer herd. They eat real good .
Just might be coming up to camp in God's country in a week or two... if I can swing it, I'll give you a call if I decide to go.
No deer down here yet, my oldest is seeing mucho deer, but nothing he will shoot. He saw the same large bear 3 times this past week, in the valley we hunt in. Hope someone kills it this year.
Get much snow up there? Today would have been a great day to be in the woods,..... day after the snow..... sunday hunting???? I'm for it.
Drinks on the snake. GO BIRDS gotta beat those "boys".

Skwirl, did the BIRDS kick azz or what? Just hope that game wasn't a fluke.
We got about 10 in of very wet, heavy snow, mostly all melted away by now. It did bring down some power lines though, there are still parts of my township without power. We were lucky, our power was off for only about 5 min.on sat. Came back on just in time for Joe Pa and the boys. TG
Hope to see ya soon.

Hi everyone. It's been awhile. While i was up in PA, which i didn't make up there till the 12th of Oct. My brakes on the Durango sprung a bad leak in the rear main line. $700 dollars later and main rear line, both rear lines, new cylnders and brakes replaced put a stop to my early trip. We ended flying up and had no wheels to get around. I tell ya what though, trying to travel with live ammo on a plane is a P.I.A. I had to explain to them that i have rifle ammo(reloads for 300 sav) and they wanted to see that they were in original box. I explained to them that reloads don't have an original box. After 15mins of trying to explain about that, then i told them that i had sabots for a black powder muzzleloader and the fun just started all over. Now they went to get the supervisor, now i've been here for close to 25min, and he shows up and want to see the powder and my guns. I said what powder and what guns, he then said that the checkin lady said i had powder and he we go again explaining everything all over. The supervisor wanted to know where my guns are. I explained that all my guns are stored in a freinds safe in PA. Finally he cleared me, but i had to take my dufflebag over to a special place to have it checked into a special X-ray machine and i had to wait till they gave me the thumbs up before i could proceed checking in. At least i have some good news. The T/C Triumph/with 3-50gr Pyrodex Pellets and 250gr T/C Super Glide Sabots did its job on 2 mature doe during the special muzzleloader season Oct 15-22 in PA. One was shot thru the heart at 45yds/went 15yds and the other shot thru both lungs at 90yds/went 30yds. Freezer has backstraps in it. Now i'll return all the favors with my own buying of a few rounds of whatever ya want. Go Eagles!!!!

Well, I'm giving up on Reloder 17 and the 140 Hornaday in my 270. I just can't get consistency. Some groups are down around 3/4 inch and others are close to 2 inches. I tried some of my old loads in the rifle, they were consistent so it's not the rifle, scope or me. The new plan is 130 grain flatbases (I have both Hornday and Sierra on hand) and H4831SC. The first run with the Hornadys gave me groups around 1.4 inches with 2 close and one out. If I play with the seating depth, they should tighten up.

Here it is 3 weeks to deer season and I'm messing around with my load yet, but I want to hunt this rifle this year. Seems silly, especially when I have a Tikka 7mm-08 that consistently groups less than an inch. Oh well, guess the gun looney bug has me bad.

Nothing for me this morning as I'm going to the range this afternoon. But I'll buy for the next crew in the door.

DS, glad you stopped in the cantina. Wow, congrats on the two does, like I always said "does eat real good". As for your car woes.... I guess we've all been there, but hey, you need GOOD brakes. I had to laugh when I was reading about your lovely experience at the airport. Reminded me of some of my HASSLES at airports when I was flying all over the U.S. for the Gov. Anymore, I hate to even go to an airport to pick up my son when he flies up from Dallas. He's due in this month on the 17th.
Will you be back here for rifle?
dk, have you tried Nosler 140grn Bal.Tips or Accubonds with Re.l 17 ? They shoot excellent in all of our .270s, as I said before, in front of IMR4350.
My Rem Model 7, 7mm-08 loves Nosler 140grn Bal.Tips or Accubonds in front of 45.5 grns of IMR 4350.
Glad to hear someone else has the "gun looney bug" likeI have had for well over 50 yrs. BUT... things are starting to slow down for this old bird.
How'd that range session go?
Looks like my Eagles ARE a fluke..... SOS year after year.
OLD#7/ginger please, TANX for the drink. Next round on the snake.

Snake, I'm running 140 Ballistic Tips and IMR 4320 in my 7mm-08.  I haven't tried any in the 270 and I'm not going out to buy some now.  I'll work with what I have on hand.  I ran IMR 4350 for years in my 270 and others but I'm tired of the big sticks of IMR 4350 that don't flow well in the powder measure and I want to take advantage of the temperature tolerance some of the new powders have.  So IMR 4350 is out.

Went to the range on Sunday afternoon and came home, everybody must have had the same idea.  There's a nearly 2 dozen benches, over half were full.  I came home.  Went this afternoon.  3 people there and 2 of them were together.   Much better.  Anyhow, I haven't been up to the gun room to measure my groups yet but I got at least one (130 gr Hornady and 60 gr of H4831SC) that is well under an inch.  I need to get more powder and load a few more for testing but that load is looking good.

Here's to small groups!

Dale
