The loft frame is in now and they have plugged the screws' holes on the posts.

WOW, you sure are going to have a beautiful place when completed.

Costly, but great, rock alwasy causes problems and blasting is expensive. Perk tests may cause longer drian fields etc with all the rocks.

By the way ,  hate to sound ignorant but what is Barrets Grave, or rather who was he,  civil war?

I have spent a bit on this small farm, and it keeps costing to keep the road in and the hunting trails in shape, but being retired gives me time to work them but have to space out the materield cost.

Good luck with your project.  It sounds fantastic.

Thanks for the info.

I would bet a civil war style cannon will be on a rise overlooking the road.

I have to make one myself for myplace.

Think I found some steel wheels to start with.

"Favorite dawg?"  Hah!  Barrett was my least favorite dawg.  He was o.k but was nuts.  He was more of Mrs. Shi's favorite dawg, but I hated to put him down just the same.  You know, a rotten dog is better than most people an all. ;-)

Went up yesterday again.  I have most of the roof framed it looks like.  Starting to look like a house finally!  I am impressed at the way they are attaching the rafters, joists & beams.  Not only are the pieces notched perfectly to fit the intended positions, they then are usually bolt or screwed together with big long screws or bolts.  Where vissible, the counter-sunk holes are then filled with wood dowels to appear like a wooden peg is doing the job.  The 2x6s making the roof rafters are nailed but the beams and joists all seem screwed and notched into position on the outer walls or other beams.  Then, atop each of these notched places they have a straight or "T" plate of sheet metal that is nailed to the parts to hold them in place.

The crane is hoisting the bigger pieces up.  The vaulted ceiling probably needs its help getting the beam rafters in place as well.  They are fairly heavy-looking.  The OSB siding on the exposed basement wall will be faced with faux-stone just as will the exposed foundational blocks.  It will look like field stone which is common in these parts.

The builder called today with the water pump price.  A remote-controled pump will go at the base of the hill and get its power from that pole.  Being remote-controlled it is a little more expenssive than wire-controlled units, but it saves in the long run by not have 1000' of buried conduit and wires to the house!  It will only pump to the "bladder" in the basement when the bladder says it is down to a certain level.  There will be 4 check valves in the line, 2 in the middle and 1 at each end to prevent back-flow.  The bladder system remains pressurized so the lines inside the house have constant pressure.  The whole thing will only be $4000 plus installation labor.  That is not that bad at all since I was expecting more than that and the builder was preparing me for a $20k estimate!  That would have been a major HALT! in the project.

Had not een able to log in for the past couple of weeks, but have looked at the pics of your house. Man that is great. I would say you lucky dog, but I doubt luck has anything to do with it, hard work and determination to fulfill a dream will get a lot done.

You have a great place and a great spot.

I had to run water and elec back here to my place which was only about 2280 feet from the road.

Makes me wish I would have worked a few extra years and done something like that. But early retirement was great too, and have enjoyed every day of it.

The realtor has shown our house a few times, but that is all I know right now.  I am going to get with her later this week adn ask if there is something the people are hanging up on I can change.  No worries yet though.  We still have 2-3 mos before the log house is ready to move into.  The outer wall is up for the 2nd flr loft now, but I don't have a picture of that at this time.  It is finally raining here now so the work may slow down this week.

Good luck selling the old one,  took me a while when I sold back in 2006. Put it on the market in July 2005 and it was Feb 2006 when i got it sold.  Not a good market up there then or now either.  Empty lot went within hours though.

You will have one beautiful place when you are done.

If you ever get a chance post a pic of one of your civil war cannons,  I want to make one (not one that shoots) for the top of the hill my house in on and point it down the private road coming in.

Shi. Its tough to sell a house right now,but you can also rent it out.I would take the advice of your Realtor they know your area best.

The wifey is an agent here.Sales are limited but rentals are going crazy.Just another option to think of if others fail..

Looking Good keep it up....

The "normal sized" house market in Mid-TN is about normal right now.  The realtor said that we have not had much slow-down with our sort of houses but the mansion market has slowed down considerably.  One problem we'll have is that we are 50 or so miles from Nashville and are in Nashville's bedroom community range.  With gas like it is people are less willing to move that far out from Nashville if that is where they work (as we do).  But, Murfreesboro is itself growing with lots of new jobs opening so there ar emany people moving here and we are only 8-10 miles from there.

The rain earlier this week held them up on the house.  But the roof panels are in and ready to go on as soon as it dries out.  We'll probably have that started Monday.

The roof framing continued last week as weather permitted.  I'm going back up tonight after work to see what has happened the past 2 days.

There will be a rock-faced fireplace in the great room between the 2 smaller windows.  It will have a wood-burning stove sitting there that my Mom/Dad are giving me since they no longer use it.  I grew up with that stove and loved having it.  I doubt I'll totally heat with it since that is a lot of work - and I am a very lazy man, but it'll be nice to have the option.  Afterall, I have plenty of wood available for free.

The man that owns the land behind me, esentially all of "Hickory Hill" except for the 5 acres I own, has contacted my contractor and asked whether or not he surveyed befor putting in my field lines on Hickory Hill.  Of course he did and we are on my side of the lines, but he said he thinks my field lines are on his land and is having his own surveyor come verify the lines.  He was nice about ti and didn't file any legal notices that could hold up work while it is hashed-out.  Good thing is I now have his name and number and will contact him regarding possibly buying some more of Hickory Hill.  He has 50 acres there on my side and reaching to the top I'd like to have since it has the old pond and a lot of larger timber and I think a cave opening.  But, I can't do anything until we get out from under the old house so there is no rush.

Yes, someday I hope to have a deck on the back built where I can sit and fire at the deer in the perk site field which will be my food-plot location about 300 or so yds away.  If I could convince Ma to let me get a bigger gun I could defend Mount Eagle from the loft or Mo-Mo's room. ;-)
