Sorry to butt in fellers, but would any of you be in the area of middle Tennessee, Perry County to be exact? We're half way between Nashvill and Jackson about 9 miles south of I-40. I have been a life member for the last several years, but left the site about 5 years ago due to low tolerance for what you might call "club administrative stupidity". I just came back to the forum a few days ago. I also haven't hunted since I moved back east because of work, but am ready to get back at it. My boys (aged 16 & 14) and I would like to do some deer hunting this year, but this white tail stand hunting is vastly differant to the scope/stalk and shoot I'm used to from out west. We would kind of like to make some hunting buddy aquaintences that would be willing to shew us the ropes. Also, If I knew where I could find a good gunsmith within driving distance, that would always be a handy thing to know. I don't know what I could offer in return, unless you like to ride horseback. We do some serious trail rides (70 miles at times), and I could maybe fix you up with something like that. Any ideas?

Genesis 1:1 = "In the beginning, God created Heaven and Earth, and Tom saw that it was good and told God so." I am in Rutherford Co, just below M'boro. I don't have any private land available to hunt other than my own little 30 acre plot which is not that exciting. You can probably get some farmer thaere in Perry to help you out. See if the local Farmer's Co-op or Tractor Supply will let you post a message on their board asking for permission to hunt. That is a starting point. Perry Co has some great hunting lands. What you need to do is learn to "drive" deer and "still hunt". In driving, you set up a stand hunter or two on deer paths. Then, you have still-hunters go down a ways off and very slowly, hunt on the move toward the stands. Still hunting is the process of taking a few very slow and careful steps, stopping for a long pause and then repeating again and again. It should take you an hour to travel 100 yds. Deer here are as hampered visually as we are due to the vegetaion. They can smell and hear and rely on these senses more than the deer out West typically do. If you do it right, the drivers or still-hunters have as good a shot at shooting a deer as the standers. Those in the stands may get one wandering down the trail or browsing unaware of the stand. Or, wary deer that sense the drivers may move toward the stands to get ahead of the still-hunting drivers. No need for scopes around here usually. We are in prime "brush gun" territory so light and handy is the way to go. Not sure if you have hunted terrain like this before, but if not learn to look for pieces of deer, not deer. You will never have a whole deer materialize before you. You will see the flick of a tail or a moving hind leg. That is about all the warning you will get in the brush that a deer is there. Freeze! There are likely several deer right there as well that you do not see whne you spy the piece of the one that caught your attention. I like my guns towed and crew-served!

Thanks for the tips. I've got 10 acres that's almost all woods, and it's surrounded by several hundred more acres of woods owned by paper company, but that land is leases by members of a hunting club out of Nashville, and last I heard it was about 700.00 a year to join. Too rich for my blood. I guess we'll try to set up a stand on our piece, follow your tips and try to get any commuting traffic.
Do you ever set up a table at the gunshow in Nashville? We'll be there this Saturday.

Waiting for the logs to arrive on the site. The contractor this week should start stone-sawing the septic line trench and digging for the 2 septic tanks and pump. Other than that there is nothing he can do until the logs arrive. The logs are probably about finished at the yard and will be assembled there this week or next, corrected if needed, numbered, disassembled and loaded onto the trucks. Pioneer said it taked 6-8 weeks from the time they take log delivery to get the thing built and shipped to us. It has been about a month now.

Don't you just love limestone?! #$%^*!? NOT!! You are getting closer to real progress where we can see a Mansion developing! I have decided "Mansion On Angus Bull Hill" is obscure to many! I will hence forth refer to it as "Rattlesnake Knob Mansion" !! "Molon Labe"

I like Rattler Knob myself, but I learned this past weekend that locals have been calling my hill "Rocky Knob" for decades if not longer. That fits VERY well too. A lady my mom knows grew up near it and said that they called it Rocky Knob when she was a kid, 50 yrs ago and said that a man had a still hidden in the hollow between my hill and my slope of Hickory Hill where the natural spring ran/runs. There was a pond there then. I have seen a photo of that area with the pond that was taken in the 1960s. The dam is blown now so the pond ran out, but when cleaning the property I did find a bunch of old metal in the brush in that hollow and threw it all away. That may have been from the still but I didn't find any copper tubing or barrels or normal still-stuff I could i.d. In the 1960s era picture, there was no brush on the hill at all. It was grazing paasture with the rocks all easily seen and only the largest of the current trees were there.
