I have a "safe room" in it of sorts.  It is a block room filled in through the block with cement.  It will double as the gun safe.  I'll have a steel door on it.  The back portion, which is where my garage/shop will be is not going to be block.  To save costs we are going to frame it and face it with "rock".  I wanted block, but we are in "save every penny possible" mode now so we decided to frame that part.  But the portion under the front of the house will be block and is underground so it will be safe enough as well.

Tom, what's "daylighting" mean?

Yeah, that's what mine will be like, except my garage will be the open side.

We went up Wed with the kids to see the hole.

Did not go up this weekend.  Been too busy trying to get guns finished and Sunday was Momma's Day so we spent that day eating and visiting.  Builder called this morning to say they killed another rattler this morning first thing.  I'll go up Wed afternoon with my brother and see how it's going.

Pioneer has rec'd our material depost and are ordering logs now.

Update from the money pit.  The blocks are all up.  First pic is the front.  The porch pillars will rest on the small block stacks and the ground level will have ot be rasied about 2' once all is said and done.  Second pic is down the east side showing the fireplace stack that will become the chimney.  Third pic is the back facing into the garage.  This side is open because it will be framed up to the log level.  The safe room is there.  It is block filled with concrete and the metal frame is also filled with concrete.  The door opens inward.  The last shot is the basement part that will be the playroom/child dungeon.

Shape up Shi!!! Been a week since your last report!

Don't guess you moved in while I was out killing Merriams....???

P.S. I went back to pics and counted block runs. You either got a good Architect, good Contractor or are smarter than I thunk yu wuz!!! GREAT!!

P.S.S. Why are you having steel door to gun room open inward??? Harder to ram a door that opens outward! I got a good buddy who found a Bank Vault door. Installed it in a "safe room" just like you have except he had a reinforced slab as the roof and not only filled blocks with concrete that surround the room but also put rebars in! Now that is a SAFE Safe Room!!

Because in case of tornado collapsing the logs, the door has to open in to let us get out.  I think I am going to eventually do a large gun safe anyway, but for now it will just have a good cypher dead-bolt and camera on it along with the alram.  Inside I may make a pivoting steel bolt mounted in case it needs to be safe from rams.  We used to have one at Jumbo Sports that was on the outside and padlocked.  On the inside, it'd survive a lot of ram attacks giving the occupants time to load the Brown Bess and fix bayonets. :-)

I am pleased with my gen'l contractor.  His name is Thad McKellar and goes to Church with me.  He seems the sort that will do things right and calls or e-mails me every day or so to update me.  I'll go up this weekend and see what is happening.  I am swamped with guns once again and need every spare minute at night during the week to work so Saturdays I can return muskets to the store.  I think he is framing now because yesterday he called with a framing question to get clarified.

Took the mighty DR up there yesterday morning to knock down the tall grass and weeds that are choking the building site and Barrett's grave.  Man!  I forgot how satisfying it is to mow down the roughage with the DR - and how tiring!  They have piled some fill dirt in and got the blocks drained good it appears to me.  They have waterproofing on the blocks and have 2" foam insullation on the outside up to the current dirt level.  The gen'l contractor is taking his yearly 2-week vacation so not much up there will happen for 2-3 weeks.  I spoke to Pioneer a while ago and the logs are being notched this week with hewing scheduled for next.

No snakes this time.  But I am sure to ioncrease the body count as the summer wears on - unless one of them gets me first.  I went up Saturday without my camera to see how it progressed.  I did not think they'd worked in a few days, but Lo! & Behold they have finished the framing in the basement and poured a great-looking concrete floor already!  It is 1-block thick and smoothed.  Mrs.Shi and I will go to Pioneer in Kingston Springs Friday and see the logs which are already notched and being hewn this week.  I'll attach pics of that.

Quail thinks "Project" means DoD has set aside $$$$$$$ to improve P-NAS and there are funds earmarked for him to get a raise or retire early with a bonus, buyout, and med insurance.

Took the kids up to eat McDonalds in the garage this afternoon and to take pics since Mrs. Shi is in a late meeting.  We may not get to see the logs up there this week or next afterall since neither of us can coordinate a day off together for 2 weeks.  We have a good thick pour for a floor!  Should handle a 1-ton lathe without trouble - and might even stand up to the kids when we lock them into the basement for days at a time fopr peace an quiet. ;-)

Pioneer Log Structures is hard at work at their yard in Kingston Springs.  They sent us pictures today of some of our logs in-progress.  It is 95F and somewhat humid today and has been the whole week.  I do not envy these guys one bit!  Th elast picture shows the main reason why we chose Pioneer.  These are log-on-log as are most homes today.  I do not like the "tongue-and-groove" exposed notch ends so they hid that while doing the dovetail as will some others we looked at.  They "hand-hew" with an adz like the #7 picture shows a guy doing.  Several others do that too.  But what we really like is shown in #8 and #9 with a random-orbitting router (or whip router) that makes the bottoms of the loggs slightly irregular just as a real hand-hewn log would be.  So the chink-lines will not be monotonously straight lines but will show narrower and wider parts along the logs' joints.
