The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced this week that it will give the public additional time to review and comment on nine new U.S. Geological Survey research papers that analyze the population status of polar bears by extending its open public comment period until Oct. 22, 2007. The USFWS says these public comments could help influence its final decision on whether to list the polar bear as a threatened species, which would in turn put an end to polar bear hunting. The USFWS’ polar bear proposal is here: http://alaska.fws.gov/fisheries/mmm...issues.htm.

What do you think? Should polar bears be listed as a threatened species?

polar bears in the US are already not open to hunting by non indigeonous hunters.  further, listing them would have limited affect on teh indigeounous hunters as they are affected by other rules and regulations, thus i am not sure that this would have any real affect on the rest of us.

Just couldn't hunt them anywhere else and import it back to the States.  Not that I have the money nor desire to be that cold!! Lol...

Part of the "reasoning" behind this is a concern over "global warming" affecting their habitat.  The Canadian populations aren't threatened and supposed to be in good shape to suatain hunting.  Sorry, know I'm preaching to the choir! Lol!!

I'm all for hunting game that there is an abundance of for food/meat, but to hunt an animal that is in any way endangered or that there are very few of is way out of line.  They have a right to exist just as we do.

To my honest opion  honestly i think if the population is threatend  and fallen then yes it should be put on the  endangerd  list  but i have to agree  with another that posted if its for food and such then yes it is ok to hunt  but not just to kill if the animal is put to good use  then it is ok  but they must be kept in check

I'm with you on that Geehee--If you can't post with your name and stand by your convictions than find a hole and crawl in!! As for the PB's> if they are that endangered than no hunt should be applied until they are recovered>But leave that decision up to the professional Game biologists and the locals (Eskimo) whom it would effect. Hunting for trophys is one thing,--hunting for food  is another. Thats my 2 cents worth....

If any animal would be endagered, weather it be the polar bear or even (heaven forbid) the whitetail, then it should be put on the endagered/threatened speices listing.  Get their number back up then, after the population can handle a few being culled, allow hunting of that speices again.  Hell I wouldn't mind having a nice polar bear rug as the trophy but I have also heard that the meat isn't bad either, and thats alot of meat.

I like the anonymous thing although the time I tried to use it to say something about the field test program, it didn’t work (how embarrassing is that) Some folks have an opinion that they think might be unpopular and like me they are too shy to express it for fear of being attacked for that opinion. But it’s still nice to get that opinion out there for discussion.

In this case Mr., Miss, Ms. or Mrs. Anonymous is 100% correct, if the animal is in danger of extinction then you don’t hunt them. I don’t even see any purpose in asking the question on whether they should be on the endangered species list. The opinions of hunters or animal right people or anyone else should have no weight in the decision. Scientific evidence on population levels and trends should be the determining factor.

I agree with them also. If you hunt an animal to endangered status or extinction, we have done nothing but harm the animal, and that is no good.

If the polar bear population is in decline we as hunters need to step forward and protect these majestic animals from disappearing.we at least owe it to our kids and their kids.

I agree 100%

But i was reading someplace that the Polar bear's reproductive organs have been getting smaller because of golbal warming. So they are not reproducing the way they should.

Do not think it is from global warming. I would shink up if i had to swim in that cold water too.

Just read the report and remain amazed that civil servants and especially the so called scientist portions of the civil service, use too many “maybe’s” or “appears to be” in what is suppose to be a report to development strategy and management direction for this great animal.  This report, as is, is to inconclusive and as such any interest group can read the darn report and just about use it to their advantage?!?

I am all for protecting any animal species that is threatened or in decline but for the love of all that is great in this world, if you want a comment then give us conclusive evidence one way or the other!!!

So, in my opinion, fire the authors(s) and get someone that can to do the survey properly then ask for an opinion!!!
