This is sad. These guys put their life on the line and they have no benefits when leaving the military. In my opinion, these guys (veterans) should have lifetime benefits. The a..holes in DC should be giving up their lifetime benefits for the veterans. We all know that will never happen. Instead they will keep milking the system. Thanks again to all you vets.

You do get the benefits when you have served at least 20 years which he didn't so no benefits. He has filed for a disability rating which will get him the same benefits depending on his % of rating.

He only had one more re-enlistment to go to get retirement benefits. He only put in 16 years instead of the minimum of 20 required to receive benefits.

He has VA health bennies unless he makes too much money.

I am retired from the Army. I will open with saying I have ZERO sympathy, empathy, or compassion for this guy.

 He is being treated as he should. His VA benefits will kick in but that process is painfully slow as is typical with Government programs.

Let’s all understand something – being in the Armed forces is voluntary. Beyond that, so is being in any Special Operations Forces (Seal, Ranger, Force Recon, etc).

Perhaps he should have stayed in until he was eligible to retire. On top of that, shut about what you did as a Seal. His family might not be as much at risk if you don’t tell people what you may have done.

He could have trained in another specialty that is more marketable in the civilian sector.  

I have a brother-in-law who was an Army Ranger and spent most of his time in infantry and Special Operations units. He did not retire from the Army but enjoys a good career as a U.S. Marshall primarily in a counter-terrorism role. Another was in the Air Force and upon leaving (not retired) joined the Border Patrol and then became a DEA agent.

He needs to ditch the "woe is me" and get off his butt and take what job is available to take care of his family. Then he can pursue soemthing he deems more worthy of his skill set.

I am curious, he has not given his name, just what he did while in. Is he useing that to speak up and out about the treatment of returning vets. That has been the what the repoter who interviewed him said. Instead many in the media have concentrated on him, and not the message the reporter has said he was tring to get out.

I am saying as a disabled vet that he should have went for a disability from the military before he decided to get out .That is what I did .I had all of my ratings before I left .And if he had gone through the discharge briefings he would have known all of this .

Regardless if he knew about the health care (or lack thereof) or not, he and all of the other vets need to be treated better when they get back here. If I was an employer (but I'm not, so it doesn't really matter), veterans would be the first guys I would interview if I received their applications. Heck, I'd probably go out and look for them. I'm sure not all of them are hard-working, trustworthy, etc., etc., but I guess that is what an interview is for. It just scrapes the surface of what they're actually like, but it's a start. Of all of the selfless things these guys have done for this country, they should be able to find work easily. It isn't right.
