Oh My God this has got to be the stupidest thing any newspaper anywhere has ever done!
Literally tens of thousands of names and addresses are shown for all to see!

http://www.lohud.com/interactive/ar...ghborhood-

The map indicates the addresses of all pistol permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties. Each dot represents an individual permit holder licensed to own a handgun — a pistol or revolver. The data does not include owners of long guns — rifles or shotguns — which can be purchased without a permit. Being included in this map does not mean the individual at a specific location owns a weapon, just that they are licensed to do so.

Data for all permit categories, unrestricted carry, premises, business, employment, target and hunting, is included, but permit information is not available on an individual basis.

To create the map, The Journal News submitted Freedom of Information requests for the names and addresses of all pistol permit holders in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam. By state law, the information is public record.

Putnam is still putting together its records and could not immediately provide any data. The map will be updated when that data is released.

I'm not sure about the legality's, but am sensing a law suit.

This is acceptable under the freedom of information act?

so, I can request the address of every Mercedes and BMW owner and publish that info? I'll just call it the 'Who to Rob' map.

LD, this is correct... They not only listed those who have a gun, but those who are easy victims with no self defense except a bat and a 911 call.

This was tried before and the information was supposed to be not covered by the freedom of information act. It may have been by a state by state basis. I do not remember. I beleieve it happened again after a massive shooting spree.  I treid finding an old report... but I smell presents under the tree....

How many actually believe that the NICS doesn't keep permanent records, and that such information would never be released under the FOI laws?

This can apply to any law; be it Gun Control, Seatbelt or DUI. It is all a slippery slope, because the punhishment only gets worse as they find it does it does not stop everyone. A Witch hunt is a Witch hunt no matter the group that starts it. Ask not for whom the bell toles.

Those not on the list could be listed as rape and pillage zones. Those listed, as do it at your own peril zones. Which one do you think would be safer. This like every thing else intended to protect us from protental harm, it usually goes to far.

I'll make it easy... I have a concealed weapons permit.

Doesn't bother me one bit... I have guns and know exactly how to use them... I might ever have a loaded one under my coat.

Interested in robbing me... give it a try, but first do a prepaid funeral for yourself.

"The BIG Lie" The phrase was also used in a report prepared during the war by the United States Office of Strategic Services in describing Hitler's psychological profile:[5][6] His primary rules were: never allow the public to cool off; never admit a fault or wrong; never concede that there may be some good in your enemy; never leave room for alternatives; never accept blame; concentrate on one enemy at a time and blame him for everything that goes wrong; people will believe a big lie sooner than a little one; and if you repeat it frequently enough people will sooner or later believe it.[7]

At least the newspaper is feeling some serious backlash from this.  Although I am sure many gun grabbers are praising them.

But readers swiftly condemned the move. They pointed out that the interactive map could make the gun owners a target, but also make clear to would-be robbers which homes do not contain a gun.

"Do you fools realize that you also made a map for criminals to use to find homes to rob that have no guns in them to protect themselves?" one reader wrote on Facebook.

"You have just destroyed the privacy of these law abiding citizens and by releasing this list, you have equated them to that of sex offenders and murders," wrote another. "These are law abiding gun owners, they are no danger to anyone except for criminals. And with this information you have made them targets for both criminals and anti gun lobbyist who i am sure are going to treat them like monsters."

Lawmaker Slams ‘Asinine’ Newspaper for Publishing Gun Info

http://radio.foxnews.com/toddstarne...-info.html

By Todd Starnes

A suburban New York City newspaper said they will publish more names and addresses of residents holding gun permits even as critics fear the newspaper’s decision will put non-gun owners at risk from criminals.

FOLLOW TODD ON FACEBOOK FOR CULTURE WAR NEWS. CLICK HERE TO JOIN!

The Journal News in White Plains, NY, said they will unveil the names of permit holders in Putnam County. They’ve already released the names of permit holders in suburban Westchester and Rockland counties.

The newspaper’s editor and vice president of news, CynDee Royle, earlier in the week defended the decision to list the permit holders – noting they got the information legally through a Freedom of Information Act request.

“We knew publication of the database would be controversial, but we felt sharing as much information as we could about gun ownership in our area was important in the aftermath of the Newtown shootings,” she told Reuters.

Controversial may be an understatement.

Republican State Sen. Greg Ball told Fox News the newspaper is “anti-Second Amendment” and called their outing of gun owners “b.s.”

“The asinine editors at the Journal News, have once again gone out of their way to place a virtual scarlet letter on law abiding firearm owners throughout the region,” he said.

Ball, from Patterson, NY, said he planned to introduce legislation that would keep permit information private except to prosecutors and police.

“This is a privacy issue,” he told Fox News. “There’s no way this paper should have made this accessible for criminals and nut jobs.”

Ball said the Gannett-owned newspaper is treating gun owners worse than sexual predators.

“They don’t go out of their way to show us where the sexual predators live,” he told Fox News. “They are focusing on people who are following the law, paying their taxes – and putting them in the same category as a level-three sexual predator.”

Many fear the newspaper put not only gun-owners at risk – but also those residents who don’t own weapons.

“Do you fools realize that you also made a map for criminals to use to find homes to rob that have no guns in them to protect themselves?” Rob Seubert of Silver Spring, Maryland, posted on the newspaper’s web site. “What a bunch of liberal boobs you all are.”

Ball said the newspaper’s “elitist egg heads” created a “virtual shopping list for criminals and nut jobs.”

“There’s a lot of talk about gun control,” Ball said. “We need to have a national conversation about nut control.”

There’s no way this paper should have made this accessible for criminals and nut jobs.

The Journal News did the same thing back in 2006 and caught heat over it. Obviously not enough. Now after the Ct shootings, they claimed the public has a right to know who has a gun & if its "next door."
In the Poughkeepsie Journal (owned by the same company) today was an article about this and Putnam County which "reneged" on providing the handgun owner's info! The county clerk has refused to do this and is getting some support by local politico's. But, unfortunately, withholding the info requested is against the law in NY State. Against the law or not, the clerk & his supporters have my support!!
The article is in the Jan 2 edition of the Poughkeepsie Journal. The one state senator's comments about the "idiots" who allowed the publishing of the info is great. He didn't hold any punches. Anyway, check it out on  www.poughkeepsiejournal.com .....sorry I don't have a direct link for ya's...

And the latest stupidity by the Journal....yesterday's Poughkeepsie Journal, 1/5/13, Mid-Hudson section, pg 2....seems someone sent a 2nd envelope to the White Plains office of the Journal. Both contained an unknow white powder, thought last week's powder was baking soda. So, following protocol, the employee who felt something strange in the envelope, put it in 2 plastic envelopes & took it "off premises" (city street???). She managed to tear off a corner of the envelope while it was still in the plastic bags, then seeing the white powder drove to a MUNICIPAL garage (more potential danger to public) and then called the police!!!
Are you kidding me??? That's your protocol?? Possibly endanger the general public? Oh, yeah, safety of your employess is the priority. Wouldn't it have been a better idea to just isolate the floor & then call the police/FD for haz-mat response??? I know they care about "the right of the public to know," but potentially expose them too??? I'm sure it was a stupid hoax by the sender, but the response by the Journal was assinine again!!
Oh, well.....
