Haven't said anything before here, but my daughter is having an MRI tomorrow to try to determine why she has been having seizures. These have been happening for a while, my wife thinks for a year or more. They look like 3 second snapshots when she simply is not there. She may be talking and suddenly seize up wide eyed, mouth open, and stuck like that. Exactly 3 seconds later, the light comes back on and she has no recollection she did it and may continue where she left off or may just be unaware what she was doing. She will drop things she is holding when it happens as well, and sometimes her hand will suddenly shake. I had experienced it many times before with her but didn't know why she just seemed to not be paying attention or something. Sadly, I often got mad because I though she was just ignoring us or not paying attention. My son also knew they were happening but didn't know what it was. Anyway, my wife only recently told me about them and had to point out to me when they happened and what they looked like before I recognized what was happening. Docs so far have done sleep tests and found she had 15 measurable seizures during sleep even and saw them happening in the office interview even when my wife didn't see them. They are becoming more frequent now so we are having the MRI done to see what is in her brain. Ideally, these can be treated with some diet changes as we learned gleuton causes these in some kids. We don't want to do medication if possible. My wife does tests on many of these same drugs and said "I'd never want anyone I love on these drugs." So, we just have to wait for tomorrow's tests to be over and see what she has going on in there. |

Patrick they are NOT grand maul at all. Todd you know prayers are on the way and I will ask that our church memebers pray as well. If there is anything I can do you know that all you have to do is contact me and you know how. I have wtinessed the type you are describing and they can be caused by diet and are usually either treated with meds for a while and most times they will stop as she gets older. This is something that you are going about the right way as she needs to be diagnosed first and then a treatment program can be decided upon. |

Thanks, Pards. My wife as most of you know works in Psych-studies dealing with many of these sorts of drugs so she knows what to look for. She had been telling the Pediatrician for a year about them but the Dr. didn't see any problem, and her teachers had not noticed it either until pointed out specificaly what to look for. Only recently did I figure it out as them have become more frequent. Thankfully from what I am hearing these are fairly common and kids usually out grow them, but they can be signs of other problems that need to be addressed. That's what the MRI hopefully will show is nothing to worry about. But it can cause her problems and embarrassment I want to avoid. She play violin and I have heard here stop suddenly before and drop the bow a few times so i think they happen when she plays sometimes. If it happens during a recital it would really tramatize her. Don't even want to think about her reaching 16 and still having them because it would preclude her from driving. She's 9 and likes science-stuff so is more interested in today's MRI than anything else but I know she is a little scared as well. This morning we found her on the couch real early instead of her bed so she was not able to sleep last night I think. |

Not that it'll help, but I've had MRI's and there's really nothing to it. Just lay there. May be told to hold her breath or turn her head one way or the other but absolutely zero felt sensations. Nothing to it. She'll be fine. Of course I understand that she probably doesn't quite see it that way... ;-) |

Shi, that sounds a little like my daughter. Her problem is called schitzencephaly and has nothing to do with diet but a small congenital "split" in the brain. I understand Mrs. Shi's concern over meds, but my daughter takes a generic version of a drug called Trileptal. She was having petit mal seizures (blank times) as well. Since she started the meds, (7 years ago) no problems and shes pretty much like any normal 19 y/o. Good luck w/your girl, our thoughts are with you. |

Todd, I too am Praying for you and your family. I know personaly that Prayers work. And IMO, if we ALL pitch in and stick togather on this, things will work out. As Mwalton7 says, other than Prayers and Moral support, if there anything else you can think of that we can help you with, let us know. None of us (I don't think) has any money laying around collecting dust, but togather we could help if we pool our resources. Even with GOOD insurance, it only goes so far, so don't be bashful. If you need help, let us know. I realize I'm maybe speaking out of turn, by saying everyone here will help, but I believe most of us are willing. |

My thoughts are with you and your daughter...
|
|
| "The BIG Lie"
The phrase was also used in a report prepared during the war by the United States Office of Strategic Services in describing Hitler's psychological profile:[5][6]
His primary rules were: never allow the public to cool off; never admit a fault or wrong; never concede that there may be some good in your enemy; never leave room for alternatives; never accept blame; concentrate on one enemy at a time and blame him for everything that goes wrong; people will believe a big lie sooner than a little one; and if you repeat it frequently enough people will sooner or later believe it.[7]

Shiloh, I just got back on the internet here in NJ after the storm and wanted to say I'll be praying for your daughter, as well as you and your family. I hope it turns out to be a minor issue that can be corrected with a diet change. Having 3 children of my own, one of which has some medical issues, I can understand how a father feels when their child has a problem of this sort. Sometimes we are given challenges and crosses to bear in life, but they seem to have the effect of making us see some things in life a little differently, usually for the better. Keep your thoughts positive and encourage your daughter and family to do the same. Most importantly, never let a chance to tell her how much you love her, slip by.

Thanks everyone. The Docs. gave the MRI images to my wife on disc and warned her to not look at them and find things to worry about. The Docs. will get back to us after they do the professional look. But, my wife being a shrink knows enough about brains to know much more than the lay-person does about the images so she was studying them last night and pointing things out. I admit to being somewhat grossed-out by the incredible detail of my daughter's head as she scanned through. It even shows tiny pores in the bone cross sections. Laurel was enjoying it all of course. The wife is a little concerned about 2 things. In the center of the brain is a cavity that looking front to back is supposed to be "butterfly" shaped and contains fluids. Well, her right side is perfect but the left side is not the mirror image that is supposed to be of the right and is much smaller, sort of oval shaped. That might or might not be something to worry about. The other item is a small white spot at the very back of the brain. It is roughly pea-sized and visible at different angles so it is not just some sort of annomoly but something actually there that is not brain. Now we just have to await the call from the Docs. On the plus side we did find out with definitive proof that yes, my kid does indeed have a brain. So, we told her, she has no more excuses and must learn to use it. |

Shiloh, I know you know this, but don't get worried and upset just yet. Wait for the Official report, and take it from there. Just my thoughts, but I figure if all us got the same MRI your daughter got, we would see things we didn't know about. Some of us probably have some blank, empty spaces, that haven't been discovered yet. That's why we are called Air-heads.LOL. Keep a positive attitude, and your spirits up, and let your Daughter know everyday how SPECIAL she is. Our children are gifts from GOD and sometimes we don't appreciate them like we should. GOOD LUCK and keeps us up-to-date. GOD bless you and your family.

Thanks for the thoughts and prayers folks. The Drs. looked at the images and saw the spot we could see as well as 2 others. But, happily for now they say these are infected areas that are inflamed and not the dreaded "C" word. What causes the inflamation they do not know but it could be as simple as a reaction to diet so that is step one, to reduce the carb intake and gluten which often is the cause of kids getting these sort of things they say. This is good news for me as well since I feel better and lose weight when low-carbing it and the wife has never been on-board to help me out before. Her response when I gripe about her making cakes and cookies and muffins and pasta is "you don't have to eat it." That's about like telling a coke-head he doesn't have to snort it even though you lined it out for him and left him alone with a straw. So, since now her lil girl needs to low-gluten it all of a sudden it is important enought that the wife is researching the diet. Anyway, we will give it 6 mos and schedule another MRI and see if things change. The wife will also keep a log of the seizures so we see if they lessen or increase at all. It'll be a major lifestyle change for the kids since virtually everything kids eat is high-carb. I did the good-dad-deed and ate all the chocolate out of their Haloween buckets so she can't accidentally get into that. That's what good dads do, right - take one for the team? |

Sorry everybody. I forgot about this post and have been busy lately and not even in the mood to debate the gun ban crap lately. She's fine. She still has the little spells, defined as "abscense seizures" but the Drs. say most kids with them out grow them about age 10-12. She'll be 10 in April. And, the last day we had her at Vandy the Dr. could not make her have one to save his life, so he said that is good and she may already be out growing them. There are spots on her brain in the MRI but they say they are likely from an old injury all kids tend to get, even from birth and are nothing to worry about. She's in 4th grade and reading at the college-freshman level and doing math at the 7th grade level so it ain't affecting her school work at all. She did have a spell at the top of our steps one day a few wks ago and I saw her falling head over heels completely out of control and limp all the way to the langing, 7 steps below. When she hit she was limp for maybe a second before starting to get back up and crying. I think it scared her more than anything because she probably did not know what happened. When she blanks her eyes are open but there is nobody home. If standing she will usually be o.k. and might rock on her heels as she regains balance, or if holding something her hands will suddenly loose finger control so she drops things. I have not seen her have one while walking or riding a bike, but she has been known to trip and stumble so that might be what is happening. THe day on the steps she was playfully hopping up the steps and right as she reached the top one she stopped still and then fell backwards. Being completely limp may have prevents injury. |
