Will 3D printing technology make gun control impossible?

http://www.impactlab.net/2012/08/30/will-3d-printing-technology-make-gun-control-impossible/

Second Amendment advocates want to make acquiring arms as easy as downloading a file and hitting Print.

Technological advances are about to make the gun debate in the United States a whole lot more intense. Forbes highlighted a project last week called Wiki Weapon that wants to prototype the world’s first fully printable gun.

In the same way that the Internet democratized publishing and the flow of information, Second Amendment advocates want to make acquiring arms as easy as downloading a file and hitting Print. Defense Distributed, the group behind Wiki Weapon, aims to raise $20,000 to buy a Stratasys 3D printer and further develop the concept. The initiative, unsurprisingly, has raised a few eyebrows.

The project may or may not reach its goal, but the idea of a fully 3D-printable gun now seems inevitable. Last year, 3D CAD models of a lower receiver for a semiautomatic rifle sparked controversy when they popped up online. Then a gun enthusiast tried – and succeeded – to use one to fire 200 rounds of ammunition.

When Tech Evolves Faster Than Society Can Keep Up

Wiki Weapon is just the latest – and most dramatic – example of how technology can evolve more rapidly than do our laws and societal norms. Just as the Internet and file-sharing platforms turned copyright on its head before any of the world’s legislatures and media companies knew what hit them, the already complex and tense debate over gun control may be about to take on an entirely new shape. And just as in the copyright wars, controlling the distribution of digital files is a lot more challenging than clamping down on the sale and distribution of physical goods, whether they’re a bootleg DVD or a semiautomatic rifle.

Second Amendment advocates are, as always, ready for rhetorical battle. On its website, Defense Distributed draws from American history to support the notion that building firearms at home is not only legal, but is a long-standing tradition in the U.S. It confesses quite openly that Wiki Weapon “is about challenging gun control and regulation.”

The legality issue isn’t clear cut. It is lawful to build a firearm for personal use in the U.S., but making one out of plastic may violate a 1988 law designed to prevent people from sneaking such guns through airport security, as Wired points out.

The 3D printing revolution has been slowly unfolding for about a decade, but it’s only in the last few years that it’s begun to creep into mainstream awareness. It’s known chiefly for common use cases like rapid prototyping and architectural modeling. But the technology is still very young. For years, there’s been talk of 3D-printing everything from houses to human tissue, and those realities are inching closer. Soon enough, the list of things we’ll be able to print out will grow even more mind-blowing. In the meantime, we already have plenty of complex issues with which to grapple.

I have no idea how this would work unless it is a program for on of those computer driven milling machines. I do remember the hank jr commercial where he said he would sent us a beer.
I guess the idea of 3-D printing is something I am having trouble understanding, maybe if I see it someday????

Actually I'm familiar with this process and have been considering investing in it.

It's amazing what  3D printing can do!
"The BIG Lie" The phrase was also used in a report prepared during the war by the United States Office of Strategic Services in describing Hitler's psychological profile:[5][6] His primary rules were: never allow the public to cool off; never admit a fault or wrong; never concede that there may be some good in your enemy; never leave room for alternatives; never accept blame; concentrate on one enemy at a time and blame him for everything that goes wrong; people will believe a big lie sooner than a little one; and if you repeat it frequently enough people will sooner or later believe it.[7]

I read an extensive in depth article as well as seen a video of this and it is amazing for sure. You can in fact build a gun with it BUT it would be completely made of plastic which makes it a prop at best. Even if you were able to fire a round the bullet would either get stuck in the barrel or simply fall out on the ground as there would be no seal and the gases would escape ahead of the bullet out the barrel. Add these up with the plastic barrell melting and/or the reviever blowing up and it is a disaster waiting to happen. Without the use of steel or aluminum for the reciever/chamber and barrel it simply will not work. Of course I expect some Darwin candidate to try and end up a front runner for this year's prize !

AMAZING!!!! I COULD NOT FIND THIS POST ON THE NAHC SITE.. .Manually went back.. and then thought hmmm what if I use bing and there it was.  I could find it with BING, but not with the sites own search engine... says allot.

It did not take long for the 3D Printer guns to make a TV show.. And of course it was to have a drug lord/hitman print up several untraceable single shot handguns!! No bias

If/when they figure out how to stop the printing process half way through and put in a barrel sleeve ( akin to the already used barrel wrapped in graphite ) and steel rails for the bolt to run on and a steel chamber insert then restart printing to finish the process I can see it being successful for making a firearm. Doing this will make it actually work and be both dependable and durable using the newer polymer plastics they are already using in making some of the new firearms. I'm with you swnoel on the investing in this new product !!!

.University of Texas law student Cody Wilson, the 24-year-old "Wiki Weapons" project leader, says the group last month test fired a semiautomatic AR-15 rifle -- one of the weapon types used in the Connecticut elementary school massacre -- which was built with some key parts created on a 3-D printer. The gun was fired six times before it broke.

I think I'll just stick with my store bought firearms. Lol. It is kind of neat though, I guess.

Amazing what this technology can do. I was unaware that they could use 3D printing with metal.. And also Bio-3D pronting.

Of course the A-Hole host has to blurt out "And a Gun" ???

So I wonder how this compares to other technical files. Does instructions on how to miodify fiorearms, build other types of firearms by other means than 3D printers violate this?

Online blueprint for 3D gun violates export law, US says. Too late now

http://news.yahoo.com/online-bluepr...00631.html

In http://us.lrd.yahoo.com/_ylt=AnC4lc...istributed" target="_blank"> a letter sent to Mr. Wilson, the department’s Office of Defense Trade Controls Compliance said he must remove all data and files “from public access immediately” due to restrictions under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).

3D printers have been around for a good while, you just never heard of them.  There are already 3D metal printers.  The statement that technology is advancing faster than  society can keep up with pretty much sums it up.

The printers could have been licensed and controlled but it's too late at this point. H*77, even Jeff Dunham has been making dummies with them for a while, don't think the bigtime crooks don't have 'em already?

And this is only the stuff that we now KNOW about. Can you imagine what's in the wings?
Due to the high cost and unavailability of ammo today do not expect to get a warning shot!!

Man who used 3-D printer to create gun hopes efforts can 'destroy the spirit of gun control itself'

Cody Wilson gave away the plans for free on the Internet. The 25-year-old, who thinks the NRA supports too much firearm control, believes Sandy Hook parents are exploiting their victimization in pushing for gun restrictions.
