Sitting home yesterday afternoon and I hear a chainsaw running. Go out and investigate guy the next street over is having a huge maple cut down. I pull over and roll down my window. Guy working on the ground looks at me and says. Do you want the wood? You better believe I do. So as the boss is cutting his chainsaw sheits the bed and the other one he has is too small for the job. He tells his partner they'll have to quit for the day. I tell him I've got a professional grade Husky would he like to use it. Says he'll take a look at it so I go home get it he takes a look at it and says "Most homeowners don't have a saw of this quality." So he finishes up and they load my truck with two loads. Then he tell me you see that shag bark hickory over on the corner? Its coming down tomorrow do you want it. He77 yeah I want it. Another real monster. Well by the time he gets outta there he's picked up three more jobs two maples and a pine. He looks at me and says you DON'T WANT the PINE do you. Nope. But I'll take the others. He says well that only leaves me one to haul away. So its a good deal for us both.  Don't think he'll be cutting that hickory today cause right now its rain/drizzle out. But who knows he's a young guy might be hungry.

Good deal. While your truck is still loaded, I could use some Maple.

Hope he has good chain sharpening skills for the hickory. Only wood I ever had a sharp ax actually bounce off of when trying to split it.

Try an Osage Orange!!! And I really don't like Elm and Gum because of twist....need a mechanical splitter

I always thought sycamore was 1 of the worst to cut and split. Now hickory is stuff we love in my area. Congrats gut! Too bad you are not closer, the park near here has a HUGE group of hardwoods that are coming down soon. But they are mostly oak and maple ...

Yep, my hickory supply for the smoker is getting a mite small here. Good stuff. Guess I need to start looking again. Got a friend that cuts trees that has brought me wood in the past. Maybe I need to say hi.

Gut, whether or not you like Hickory, Mesqite, Apple or maple for smoking for a Bar-b-que, do not put that Carolina crap on it ....ugggg....MUSTARD???????

Tom is right, that Osage Orange is some tough stuff, but frozen Tamarack will make a maul bounce on the first few whacks at it too. And the stuff burns so hot that I know one person who welded the stove door shut by burning straight dry Tamarack.

Locust burns really hot too I love it.
Got a call from a guy in the next town he'd been working down the street when the guys were cutting the tree. and he had a tree needed coming down too close to driveway and house. Well, he asked if I wanted the wood. OF COURSE I DID!! He called yesterday tree was down. He gave me directions and I put my saw and saw tool box,premix, and bar oil into the truck. WHAT a TREE. Maple; they left 7ft of trunk standing sguy could pull it over with his bulldozer. Wrapped a tape around it NINE FEET! Well. the guy cut it into 96" lengths. So I started marking and cutting 18" lengths homeowner was helping because he knew about my conditions. Took four hours(I gotta stop more than most people). It took three people me included(not much help) to load some pieces. Now I'm driving a Tacoma first load I guesstimate at min 1 1/2 ton by the way the rear tires were bulging. Drove home at 30MPH in 45 and 50 zones. Now I meet the idiots I'm in the rt lane of a four lane highway and people behind me are honking their horns showing me they think I'm number one. Hey there's another lane use it!!!!!!!!!! So now I've got wood from two monster maples in the yard that needs splitting. Lightbulb goes on! I go over to Lowes Troybilt splitter Honda 160cc 27 ton rating on sale and I get 10% for being a vet on top of that I get the manager to throw in a 20" chain for my Husky saw. Now if it would stop raining I've got close to four face cords or one whole cord to split and stack fer next year. I've got almost that much ready to burn in the garage.

Need to get a wood burning furnace, we have one in the back yard. The chimney is only 2' tall. We can burn any wood
and do, Our average gas bill for heat, hot water,cooking and dryer is $28.00 for the month of January.
We live in South Jersey. The tree cutter guys up here drop off trees usually around 6-8' in length. We cut and split as needed. It is cheaper for them to drop off what they can not chip rather than take it to the dump.

Thought I would chime in on this with my 2 cents.
