Maybe this will change the subject for a little while. I have to have my left hip replaced in two weeks. A total replacement. Have any of you had this type surgery and what is the recuperation time? I want to be back in the woods by the first of October for Bow Hunting. Papaw Jim |

Never had one myself but my mother had three (wore one out). When is the surgery? If its soon like tomorrow you'll be cutting it close and you'll probably need a buddy for assistance in and out of the woods. BUT everyone's different work hard at the PT and you'll be surprised how quick you're up and about. |

Thanks fellows....I'm not looking forward to the pain but I know I can't go on much longer with what I have now. I hate this walker! I've heard people and my doctor says that 8 to 10 weeks should have me walking pretty good. I hope so. I sure hate to miss any of bow season. July 2nd at 7:00 am is the scheduled date and time. Had a visit with hospital people yesterday and they predict (on a typical patient) that I'll be 90% within 3 months and 100% after a year. 90% is good enough for where I hunt. Thanks for all the well wishes. Papaw Jim |

Thanks guys, Therapy is going good so far. I didn't know there was so many ways to bend a hip and work muscles. Man am I sore. But I know that that will pass in time. Thanks for all the good thoughts.

I have several friends who have had both the knee and hip replacement surgery and everyone of them told that they wished they had done it sooner. The last one was the hip and she was up walking the next day. After 6 weeks rehab she now does it daily herself and said the same thing as the rest in that she wished she had done it sooner as the pain after the surgery and rehab was nothing compared to what it was before. It has now been 4 months and she is pain free and is able to do a she likes of course still taking care till the 1 year mark passes. You should be able to be in the woods come October without any problems but as I'm sure you know to take care and not fall and whatever you do stay out of any treestands till next hunting season. I had to give up treestands a few years ago ( I still will sneak into a good ladderstand when possible ) and now hunt mostly either just from a camo folding chair and a camo cloth in front or a popup ground blind. I would suggest a good ghillie suit as this is what I did and they work so good I have had animals standing and trying to look around that blob ( me ) in front of them. The best and get well soon. |

That's Alright ole buddy, You were kind of out of it for a long time. I'm sure glad you're doing better. You, Kathy, Lil Bit, etc have been in my prayers. Good to know they work!
I have to go back to the Doc in the AM. I almost fell yesterday and the new hip has a kind of grinding feeling when I walk. Getting it checked out. Still doing therapy 3 days a week and can't drive very far. So, I guess I'll miss the reunion with TiT unless ya'll come over here. Would love to have ya.
Hurry up and get back in the "garage". I need a new deer skinning knife.
Take care, Jim

Papaw Jim, I’m sure everything is going to be fine with your hip. My mother-in-law had to have both hips done 2 years ago, and she said the same thing about wishing that she had the surgery done sooner. The ease of moving around, and lack of pain, she told me that she was stupid for putting the surgery off for so long. You know it’s a little strange calling you Papaw Jim. My grandfather Jim who was on my father’s side was from Kentucky, and I grew up calling him “Papaw”.

Making the decision to have the surgery is harder than going through it, although the rehab can be rough at first, it absolutely, positively, with out a doubt, will help the healing process. Been there and done it three different times, once after the strokes, once after the open heart surgery, and again after the back surgery. I've seen too many people quit with the rehab and end up paying for it, later!!!!!!!!!! |

For anyone having surgery or a wreck like mine the biggest tip I can give is set goals. And don't go big My first goal was to get up with a walker. Walk unaided. Get up and down stairs so I could jump the Old Ladies bones. Goals met that I won't forget: getting out of that hospital Sept 20 Walking with a walker Nov 10 Walking on my own Dec 10 Walking around the block June 15 First time bow practicing July 19 First three shot group in a two inch bullseye at 20yds Aug 8. Day I made peace with the fact I'm crippled for life................I'll let ya know on that one. Frist dead deer with the bow You'll all hear the Rebel yell You'll all have days when the depression will sit on you like a 100lb anvil and you'll want to cry like a baby well go ahead I've cried buckets no shame there get it out then get up and move on. Lean on friends/relatives when the going gets to dragging you down. And shower the people you love with love. TNT Dawg I love you guys. |

Boy... sounds like a very tall order to me Jim. Sorry. No, I haven't had the procedure but recovering from most anything in one month is extremely rare. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I think I'd hang up the bow for this year. BUT no matter what the physical therapists tell you to do.... DO IT! Good luck! |

Guys, I can tell you this. There IS God, not A God, but God himself. He DOES listen to you AND pay attention. He ALWAYS gives you a highpoint or bright side to look at or see in every situation. Look for those things, you'll find them. I've been there done that and speak from several experiences. Of all the friends, relitives and aquaintances you will ever know, YOU are the strongest of them all with the exception of God and HE gave us friends and family to lean on. Even though we lean on those folks, we still need to hold ourselves up and do all we can to grow stronger and heal.
Love ya bros |

Well, I'm 2 months from surgery and progressing very nicely. My Physical Therapy will end this coming Friday, but I know the exercises and have the weights so I can continue doing therapy at home. I've been doing it on my own on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays so I'll now do the six days a week at home. Still have some pain in my hip and left knee but it is getting better. Can walk for short distances without cane. Looks good for being in the woods the first part of October. But, I may have to whip the wife and my son has threatened to come get my guns. I told him - NO WAY.

Well, here I am again. I got bursitis in the new hip and today I find out I also have tendenitis. Doc gave me two big shots of cortisone. I can walk fairly well but in a lot of pain if I go very far. Doc say 3 more weeks of Physical Therapy.
Oh well, its too hot in Louisiana to hunt right now anyway. I should be ready by the first of November...Lord willing.

I don't know about how many but he gave me 2 shots in the hip 6 weeks ago and 2 in my knee 2 weeks ago
and then 2 more in my hip today. So far the one today hasn't done much. He says that PT will help. I sure hope so...This is
getting old. But, Gut made it with a lot worse than this so I can too.

That's a beautiful baby girl in your avitar. Thank God she don't look like Brian.
It's supposed to be even better for the first of the week but it won't last. Maybe it
won't be long before it stabilizes. I need to get down to Jackson-Bienville and clean
some shooting lanes before rifle season anyway. If the old hip allows it!
