I use a .308. With folks I have hunted with over the years, I have seen everything from the .22-250 to the 300 Win Mag. and most everything in betwween. I reckon it's a personal choice and what you're comfortable with. Whatever you use, be safe, enjoy your hunt and hunt often. What part of the state do oyu hunt in? |

I hunt in Hampshire Co. A lot of public land up here with decent results. What about you? |

I live in Mineral County. I hunt some in Hampshire, Short Mountain and Nathaniel Mountain. Mainly hunt there for turkey, grouse and other small game. It is just a hassle now to get deer out of the county with the CWD containment. I am a hunter ed teacher in Hampshire County. Love doing this. I do love hunting the two Public Hunting areas. Most all my deer hunting is in Wetzel County. Have family with land there. |

I am a late hunter. I did not hunt in my youth. Now that I have been hunting regularly for 14 or 15yrs its in my blood. I love everything about it. My kids have gotten very interested as well. I haven't hunted anything on Short Mtn except deer. I hope to get some Turkey hunting in this season though. Good luck to you this season! |

I have used several calibers over the years of hunting (30+), I have used 30-30, 8x57 Mauser, 7x57 Mauser, 303 British and 30-06. I know use mostly 30-06 for all of my rifle hunting for deer. I do have a 25-06 that I purchased about 3 years ago that I have used and have taken two deer with it. One shot and they were down, no need for a follow up. Pretty much the same with the 30-06 as well, especially after I got into reloading and reload all my own ammunition now. Both rifles are bolt action, the 30-06 is a Remington Model 700 and teh 25-06 is the new Marlin XL7. Most of my buck only hunting is done in Greenbrier County in the Monongahela National Forest around Sherwood Lake which is located off Route 92 north of White Sulphur Springs, WV. Bow hunting and small game hunting is mainly on the 8,000 acre lease I belong to in northern Fayette County, WV. Have done some rifle hunting there when I couldn't get to our camp in Greenbrier County. Good luck to you this season.

When I use a rifle I probably use the least used caliber in WV, lol...the 8mm Remington Magnum. I do a lot of handgun hunting 44 mag, 45 Colt, 454, 460, 500, and others. Good luck hunting this fall.... |

Rea, I have never used a handgun when hunting and don't know anyone who does. Other than the obvious what are the differences between rifle and handgun hunting when hunting deer? |

I have a S&W 629 Classic topped with a 2X scope. I've taken several deer with it. The BIG thing for me is to make sure of a steady rest. I have taken a couple deer at the 100 yard mark, but most have been closer 50-75 yards. I love the challenge of handgun hunting. |

I think the biggest difference is the amount of practice required. I can pick my gun up after leaving it in the safe for 6 months or more, and in short time be putting round after round in the bullseye, but I can't do that with the handguns. Grip position repetition os critical. I don't feel particularly handicapped if I get the requisite practice. My longest shot on a deer in WV was 125 yards and that was with a 61/2" Smith model 29 44 mag. Longest with a rifle is about 110 yards. |

When I hunt in WV with friends that live in Mercer County, we all use .270s or bow. Once I used a 6.8 spc and they all looked at me like I was using a sling shot or something. |

I use a .270 and I'm a member of a West Virginia Sportsman websit that had a poll and the .308 edged out the .270 and in third I believe was 30/30. But .243, was also another one in the top 5 along with 30.06 |
