Wow, seems like a lot of land is being snatched up by various lease holders, etc.   A few years ago the land we hunted, owned by a timber company, started charging money for trespass fees.  This year the land we hunted for the past three years is now posted by some lease holders.  Don't have a lot of time to scout/find new areas in the offseason.  Have to stick to game lands/national forests, etc. or hunt the little tracts of woods near suburbia.  It's a little disappointing.

Don't forget state forests, state parks, and the Game Commission has some public access programs. Try this link.

Game lands always worked for me , but as in any place like you say got to scout it out . I found my core area years ago by still hunting . Think of it as a long term investment , rather than a short term .It will pay dividends .
