After 13 years, I finally managed to be selected for a cow tag.

Are you familiar with the area at all? Are you doing a DIY hunt or going threw an outfitter?

My son drew a cow tag up there about 10 years ago.  We drove the logging property and found a 2 year old cow, took 3 days.  I'm interested in an older cow this time.  Just got a letter from an guide who only takes 1 client for moose, but he is $1650.  With the cost of the nonresident tag and the guide fee totaling over $2000, I'm not sure it's worth all that money.

I'm open to suggestions.

Well with unit 6 being up in Aroostook county there is alot of timber up in that neck of the woods. The best thing to do is get online and start looking up some topo maps of the area in which you will be hunting or just browse around on Google maps or use mapquest to check out different areas.. I know just south of Presque Isle down Rt. 1 Is Aroostook State park, and from the looks of it I cant find anything that says you cant hunt in there. From the looks of it you can also head down Rt. 163 and there is alot of timber down that way as well. Iv done some research of the area and last year there was a 73% kill rate for moose in that area. So instead of dishing out all that money it would be better for you to do a DIY hunt to save yourself the boat load of cash it will cost you to hire a guide. You can save yourself some money by getting a motel in the area or set up a camp in the back country. These are just some suggestions of course. Im no expert by any means but just trying to throw out some ideas. It will be much more satisfying to do a DIY hunt and to bring home a moose that to drop over 2k on a guide and come home with nothing. Just my opinion of course. Hope this helps let me know if you need any more information or help with anything.

I was having the same thoughts.  I am also receiving mail from Guides in the area.  One offered a unguided hunt that included room, meals, point me in the right direction, recovery of moose and butchering for $1100.  I hope I get my Maine Sportsman soon, they have a lot of ads for motels that cater to hunters.

Thanks, do you or anyone know of hunter friendly motels/hotels in smaller town such as Mapleton, Washburn, Ashland, Portage, Masardis, Westfield, Mars Hill, Bridgewater, Monticello, Littleton, etc.  This time, I'm looking to get away from the masses.  Thanks
