I have started to look for a hunt/outfitter for a brown/grizzly bear hunt with my father for 2012. Along with my father a couple of our close friends (2) will be going along to hunt black bear. My dad and I are looking to hunt brown/grizzly and wolf if it works out.

I am a seasoned hunter, and in relatively good shape. Dad is in his mid 60's and a bit overweight. He does not have any health problems, but I can not see him doing endless spot and stalk hunts all day long. I have seen some outfitters that spot by boat (kind of a base camp) and then go ashore for a stalk. This might be a better fit for my dad.

I am looking for recommendations for outfitters by people that have first hand experience with. I am not looking for "I have a friend of a friend of a friend that went up there once......"  you get the point. This trip will be the trip of a lifetime for all of us. My dad has this trip on his "bucket list", so it means alot to him and I as well.

Thank you for any insight, tips or suggestions.

Hi Paul -
Check out
www.westwindguideservice.com for brown/grizzly hunts.  The outfitter /owner is Tony Lee and he has some real good deals on these hunts.....2 bear limit.  This area where he hunts just has too many bears and the Fish & Game increased the limit from 1 to 2.  You can kill one and so can your dad.  You just share a guide. And the prices are really "cheap".  If they aren't posted yet, give him a call and tell him Bill in Florida told you about it.

Doubtful, but it depends on the guide area.  Interior, or coastal?  It makes a difference since each guide has a prescribed area.  If you're interested in a guide in SE-AK on Admiralty Island (home to the largest number of brown bears per square mile anywhere in the world) then I have a few recommendations.  The benefit of SE-AK is you could combine world-class salmon and halibut fishing and glacier viewing all in one trip and make it the Alaskan dream vacation that your dad would remember his whole life.

Try:

Alaska Coastal Guiding, Mike Sofoulis, http://www.akcoastalguiding.com/

SouthEast Alaska Guiding, Hans, http://www.seaguiding.com/

Another thing to consider is since you want to do brown and black bear, that not all areas of the interior have both. SE-AK has huge brown bears and huge black bears depending on the island group or mainland section that you hunt.  And Alexander Archipeligo wolf inhabit these areas too.

Very good Jim, good advise!! However, I'd like to put in a plug for a young man, who is a durn good guide, weather it be Browns, Blacks, or just a fishin' trip!! Kurt Whitehead!! He has a very nice vessel that he hunts or fishes outa.
Alaska Glacier  Adventures!  www. AlaskaGlacierAdventures.com, or www.AlaskaFishingOutfitters. com, or ya can find Kurt on kurtw@yahoo.com, on face book!!
I personnally know that Kurt is a very successful bear guide, because, as ya know, in the spring hunts, ya are required to salvage all the meat!! I do not hunt bear. Don't have too. Kurt gives me a lotta the meat that his clients don't wanna take home!!

Hey Grumpy!  Being an old-country Polack, some good sour kraut would be enjoyable right now.

Check your e-mails.  How ya been?

Alls' well Jim. Will be done workin' for the summer, next week. Will be able to spend more time beatin' the bush and whoopin' them creeks into a lather with my fly pole for the rest of the year!
