Each situation is unique and calls for a different tactic. I don't have a personal preference. While my climber is by far the most comfortable option, I still ike to hunt out of ladder and hang-on stands. The more permanent stands need to be in the woods several weeks in advance of your hunt and a climber needs to have good coverage around you to help hide the additional 'appendage' to the tree and help conceal you better. I like to hunt about 15'-20' high. Much higher and I have found that my bow sight has needed additional adjusting and I don't feel comfortable with that shot. |

I mostly hunt out of hang-ons when I'm bow hunting because I like to get 20 to 25 feet up in the tree, but thats just my personal preference. I also really like climbers because if your hunting ground that your not real familier with you can try multiple spots without making very much noise. |

My stands are all permanently located over my food plots, and range from a 20' two man ladder stand, tower blinds, A-frame, and a shooting house. |

Another thing you might try if you have have permanent stands is setting a silhouette in camo clothes in your stand. This will let the deer get used to seeing something up in the tree so they will be even less curious when you get up there. I would do this a couple weeks after setting up your stand so you aren't throwing too much at them all at once |

I have 2 ladder stands, and 1 tower. The tower is 16ft at the base, and the ladders are 15ft. My ladders are 2 person stands even though I'm the only one using them. They give me plenty of room for my gear.

O feet of elevation for me. I use whatever stump I can find or a nearby tree to lean against. I'd go nuts if I sat in the same spot all day. Dale |

My ladder stand is 15' and my climber is for packing in so it is light with no rail and very comfortable . With the climber I take advantage of thick stuff and height is determined by best view , usually 10 to 20 with about 12 being the norm. |

I have hunted from climbers, ladders, and hang-ons. Each has it's own strengths and weaknesses. Ladders are the easiest to get into and out of, but they are heavy, leave the biggest "footprint" in the woods, and are more difficult to move around. Hang-ons are harder to get into and out of, but are lighter and have a small footprint in the woods. Climbers have no real footprint in the woods, have varying weights, and take practice to go up and down the tree efficiently. The biggest problem I have with climbers is the fact that you have to hump it into and out of the woods every time. Should you be successful in your hunt, you have to hump out the stand, your gun (or bow), your pack (if you carry one), and the deer. Unless you are a large person and/or in great shape, this can be quite a chore. |

Got that drag thing figured out in the deep woods by taking the stand , pack , and bow or gun out to just within sight of the deer . Then I walk back and drag the deer past it till the stuff is just in sight behind me . Actually it's like a beak as you walk back to retrieve either . Works out pretty good . |

MRD, it wasn't that long ago that method was closer to my M.O. But I ain't getting any younger I turned 50 years old this year. I've picked up all 3 of those machines in the last 9 years. These days I try to make things go as easy as I can. I don't want to drag anything any farther than I have to on foot. RT4, that 3 wheeler is my bog/swamp buggy. The quad covers the high ground, and the snowmobile is pretty much self explanatory, when it gets to that point it goes everywhere. The machines also make it much easier to move a stand should I decide to do so, which does happen from time to time |

MRD, down here, a 'gator might end up with either the deer or the pack (or even the hunter) if we tried that method. |

Lunkerdog I remember 50 , that happened five years ago . Just takes a tad longer that's all nowadays , still gets to the truck in the end though . Honestly though if that was legal on public land here I just might be doing some shopping . rt4 point well taken ; we just got yotes and bears up this way so if you can be insight of the deer things are fine . |

Steve, what is that line on the winch? Does it rewind smoothly and what is the weight limit, and where can it be found? I'm tired of the old braided cable, and having to cut the frayed ends off and redo the loop for the hook with cable nuts. Yeah, and you young 'uns don't know anything. Why I remember having to haul deer out of the woods thrown over my shoulders, and walk 10 miles uphill both directions in 4 feet of water and..........................wait, that wasn't me, that's the stories some other old fart told me once!!!!!!! |

It's a tow rope option from Warn. I got it with the RZR from Polaris. It ain't cheap but it's pretty dang strong. I don't know what it's rated at but I've got myself out of some pretty serious mud with it. Believe me, these things are awfully hard to get stuck... but I have managed... It does wind very well but as with any rope/cable you have to make sure to move it back and forth while winding it back in. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Polaris-WARN-Synthetic-Replacement-ATV-Winch-Rope-NEW-/190464985992 |

Wha?!? That freekin' rock was HEAVY and I needed it about 50 yards from where it was... I wasn't about to carry the sob! I was starting a firepit and had to move about 20 of 'em. Now deer go up on the back and ride out, but you got the idea. |
