I don't know about the rest of you out there, but I'm counting down the days 'til opening morning.  August 15th is agonizingly slow in getting here.  There are now 23 days and a wake up, before we can turn the hounds loose.  Last year, I killed a very nice 8 point in full velvet the first weekend of the season, so I'm really looking forward to opening morning down in the swamp.  We have added about 15 dogs to our pack, plus we have a new member who owns about 40 head of hounds.  This season promises to be great!

Today, I sprayed herbicide on my freshly mowed food plots in preparation for planting a new crop of soybeans, sunflowers, and turnips.  With the recent rains (we've been in a drought), I expect fantastic results; but will also be getting a supply of corn for my bait piles.  I will also be doing some repairs and wasp exterminating this week on my tower blinds, ladder stands and ground blinds.  The shotguns and rifles are all cleaned and ready, but I still need to double check all of the scopes.  Since they were fine when I put them in the cabinet last January, I don't expect that there is much to do in order to have them "right on" at 1" high at 100 yards.

Anyhow, I thought I'd start this thread so those interested could describe their upcoming seasons and if anyone else is also counting down the days!!!!!

Too early to start counting yet. General season doesn't open here till the first weekend in November. Got to get through dove season first, September 1st.

I am beyond counting down 38 days until opening day here in Kentucky. Vacation time is already in place and ive been moved to 4 10's at work so I have more time in the woods.

svodilia, I checked on the price of cob corn, yesterday. It's currently at $11.75 per bushel and is expected to go for $15.00 as August 15th approaches. Hell, even turnip seed is now $5.00 per pound! BTW, ThermaCell is the greatest invention of modern man!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wouldn't be able to hunt down here in the lowcountry if I didn't have my ThermaCell!!!!!!!!!!!

Have not been able to get into the mood so far due to the heat. I have to wake up to a cool foggy morning usually in early Sept. before it snaps in me. But the regs just came out here and I see my archery season starts 22 Sep. I sat here and did the math and see that I can take up to 315 does & 3 bucks this year so I guess I better get some more ammo. Last day of the season is 6 Jan. Hogs now have no limit anywhere in the State it seems. Squirrel season ins starting 28 Aug. so that will be my 1st-blood day with my kids.

It's not too bad when I can walk less than 75 yards to a shooting house or a ladder stand. If not one of those, then ride the 4-wheeler to one of 5 other stands. The most essential item is the ThermaCell, especially when dog hunting down in the swamp!!!!!!!!! Of course after killing a deer, the real sweating begins with loading it and getting it back to the house or skinning shed.

Had a buck in my front yard Wed night. My dog on the porch was whining and I looked out and saw it in the full moonlight broadside, head erect looking at the house/dog. I could see tall antlers but couldn't make out the points. So, my "stand" may be my front porch rocking chair in a few weeks.

I have them walking in my yard, all of the time; even in the middle of the day. I've thought about sitting in a chair, under my deck, with a shotgun!

9 days and a wake up! My food plots are all pretty and green with new growth, and yesterday I put out my first bag of corn and replaced a couple of trail cams. All of the tower blinds, tree stands, and ground blinds have been repaired, and ammo checked to make sure I've got plenty for each caliber rifle and each shotgun and pistol. The 4-wheelers have been inspected, as well as the trailer, so I'm just sitting on go!!!!!!!!!

Had a doe working the clearing on the back of my property last eveing and another doe in my front yard this morning driving the dog crazy.  Starting to feel it now.  I'll take the DR mower to the back clearing this weekend and cut it up some and will put some Deer Cain out to freshen the holes.  They tear that stuff up and it holds them tight to my property.

Most of the corn is already gone! Fresh tracks everywhere, and also had a pic of a very nice 9 or 10 point ( couldn't tell for sure with the angle). BTW, after yesterday's late afternoon thunder boomer, I had 5 big turkey hens walking around in my front yard, but no poults! I'm wondering if the damn 'yotes raided the nests. I also had a pic of a 'yote with a whole cob of corn in his mouth walking off of one of the food plots.

I killed my first buck of the season yesterday afternoon at 7:10. Although it was a small fork horn, I needed meat!!!!!!!!!! Dropped him in his tracks at about 85 yards with a neck shot from my TC Encore in .308. I don't have the pic downloaded, yet. Strange little buck, though. One side was already rubbed clean and the other is still in full velvet. I've never seen that before.

Nice little buck there, RT. Can't say as I have ever seen one with velvet on just one side before either.

October 1 is the bow opener here in Iowa. Like gopheer1, I've been counting the days since last season closed.
