I am looking to get into duck hunting and am going to get a boat and engine. I was thinking of getting a 16 foot boat and will probably have one or two other people at most with me but usaly just me and another person. I am going to hunt on the saginaw bay in michigan, the water can get a little rough at times. I dont plan on having to go to far to get to a good spot. So my question is how big of an engine?? I dont have to much money to spend and plan on getting everything used so i want to keep it kinda cheap. What do you guys use and or recommend for me? Thanks!

Depends on the size, style, and weight of the boat. Could range anywhere from a 10hp to 65hp or possibly even bigger if ya want to get there faster.

I dont need to go to fast and would rather get a cheaper smaller motor. I dont know exactly the style of the boat yet but an aluminum 16 foot boat. Would 20 or 25 hp be in the ball park of big enough?

Every boat has a maximum horsepower rating listed on the capacity tag just make sure you don't exceed the rating. Even though you don't plan on going fast, something that is about 75% of the max hp is as low as I'd go .

Yep, push the rating but don't exceed.

16' boat is not what you want for rough water.  I'd go 18' minimum.

Keep saving your money and buy what you really want. If you don't, you won't be happy with the boat.

Saginaw is big water and depending on how "far" you're going and how rough you'll hunt is a a major factor . I know guys who use everything from tiny oneman paddle boats to 20'pontoons boats with full camo cover . I myself have two "duckboats" a 16' camoflaged bassboat with a 60hp console steer and a 11" cayak that I use to float and jumpshoot Woodducks on small creeks and swamps.
