I finally got in good with a local cattle rancher near my home.  He invited me out to help him clear out the Prairie dogs that have infested his fields.

I have not had this much fun shooting in a long time. 

I went threw 800 round in my 10/22  and we did not even make a dent in the population..   As to how many dogs we took down I can only guess.   By the end I was hitting at about 95% hit miss ratio.  

I came off my horse last year and broke my Right shoulder and collar bone and have not shot any of my rifles since then.  To say the least I was very soar and sunburn the next day but it was so fun.

I am now hooked on hunting these little dog.

never got a chance to hunt prairie dogs before dont even think they live around ky but I do how ever hunt ground hog and I dont think there is much difference in them I think we have a little bigger target but never the less it's loads of fun and I have never had a chance to shoot 800 rounds in one day... man that sounds like a load of fun I hope you the best with your shoulder and collar bone and keep on shooting good luck

Another one hooked. It's not only a great time but a learning adventure. Take my grandkids every chance i get. They love it. Teach them and let them shoot, it don't matter if they kill or not, your educating them, and they have fun. April and May is when the stupid ones are fun.

Not a good year fot them little dogs here in WY. Don't know what's killin them? Maybe the drought? Here in SW Wyoming weren't many to shoot in the spring, and even fewer now!
Just woundering if anyone else has seen this?

Not a bad year in the NE corner. Lots of little ones. good luck down there on elk this year.

Just got a call from the rancher. I will be heading out again Tue. for more dog hunting. This time I will have sunscreen and 1000 rounds. My poor ruger will be wore out at this rate. I will bring the camera also and post a few photos for all to enjoy.

Well.?? How did the second trip go. A 223 or 22-250, would extend your range quite a bit. 22lr is a lot cheaper thou. Keep shooting

Sorry for the delay. I had a ball on this trip as well. I was shooting Remington 31gr hp 1450fps rounds and they were thumping those dogs. We ended up taking 487 dogs out of a small corner of this 1200 acre field. my thumb is still sore from reloading mags. I did get a few good photos and will try and upload them tonight.

The rancher had 3 other groups out there besides me and my girlfriend. They did much worse them us. At the end of the day we all met up and got to telling stories. (grin) When we left I had 9 rifles in the back of my truck for trigger jobs and general repair. I am a gun smith and have a small firearms store. That was a very profetable day of shooting dogs. grin.

Heading out on a scouting trip to Idaho this week and then back to dogs next month.
