hey every one august 18 is opening day here in kentucky for squirrel.  I know most people are busy with planting food plots and geting ready for deer season.  but for those who dont deer hunt and live for small game hunting any one else excited for small game seasons to open like me? there is nothing like finding that perfict tree that just fits your back and watching the mountains come a live in the morning in a big oak thicket or hickory stand maybe they are cuting on beach who knows.  just do your home work and find out and yes im saying even squirrel hunting needs some scouting to full your vest with bushy tails. And always remember to listin for God's voice at sun rise and thank him for what you have and for the beautifull mountains you hunt in. I hope to see you in the woods this fall and remember always leave the mountains in better shape than you found them.  Best wishes and good hunting God bless

Yeah, opens 9/1 in NY.   Given that I've recently retired I'll probably spend quite a few nice fall days in the woods this year. I use a .22 and head shots only so its good practice, good eats, and good scouting time. No-brainer.

i also use a .22 but it is a Air rifle. shoots a 18gr. pellet at about 940FPS for a good 30-35 ft-lbs. head shots is usually all i take on all small/medium game unless no way around so i will then do a heart/lung shot. which is quite tough on a squirrel as they are such a small target to start with. im usually good for a good 50 yards with the Air Arms S410ERB. of course the fact that i have a 4-16x50 Hawke mill dont on there helps a bunch

AZ sucks for big game but we are blessed for small game. A year round season for rabbits makes for lots of fun and practice. Hope you all enjoy your hunting.

I can't wait Sep.1 here in Ohio. I'm taking my 5 year old daughter this year! she loves to eat squirrel meat. she got camo clothes and a pink pellet gun for her birthday! I can't wait until she is a little bit older to go deer hunting. I've taken my 14 and 15 year old boys hunting for years. now its her turn to start.

It amuses me that even on the small game hunting form that you cant get away from some one talking about big game hunting I guess that im one of the few that got my fell for big game at a young age and as i grew older I found a love for small game. Dont get me rong I still have a passion for big game but it seams like every were you look all you see is deer or elk hunting there is just so much a man can take. I guess what im saying with all this excitment of small game season opening in ky I just get tired of seeing big game hunting on tv and every were else you look. I think they should be a small game hunting series of squirrel hunting rabbit hunting and coon hunting on the out door chanle. who's with me? lol well any way Mr.generalredneck01 keep doing what you are doing and take your daughter hunting and keep a American tradition alive in here squirrel hunting is the marrow of what makes some of the best hunters in the world. And if she loves squirrel hunting or any type of small game hunting like me and so many others do thats wonderfull but if thats just what she cuts her teeth on then goes out in the world as a big game hunter thats fine to. best wishes to all and good hunting this fall god bless

I'll be taking my 6 yr old son on his first squirrel hunt this month. He wants to go and keeps asking me to let him shoot his .22 at the range. We just can't get to the range like I want. I'm just glad Missouri has an early squirrel season (May 26 opener). He had to work hard all summer to prove to me he was ready to go with me. My dad wasn't able to take me when I was his age. He was always working. At least I'll be able to start him early enough in life to appreciate it.

Here in Georgia we always wait until the first good freeze and then it's hunt'em up as I love hunting squirrels with my .22 which as has been said headshots which helps make a better shoot of anyone. We wait till the fist freeze to make sure the parisite that has always been called " wolves " are dead from the cold. They will showup underneath the skin as a small lump but after the freeze they go away and don't showup again till warm weather returns. This is just how I was taught to him all small game here so it may not be the same wherever you live. Good well fed country squirrels make for some very good eating and my favorite is breaded and fried with gravy and biscuits. I also like them fried with a good brown rue over white rice. Whiel growing up on a 110 acre farm small game was a pretty good part of our diet by choice and I always maintained 14 Beagles for running them rabbits that are just as good as the squirrels cooked the same ways. Dang man I done went and made myself hongry !!!

It opened Aug. 15th here in Indiana and usually I get as excited about it as I do deer season. But not this year.I really don't have a place to hunt.Don't have much of a place to deer hunt either and maybe not coyote. This hunting season doesn't look promising.

Missouri season run's fro Memorial weekend to the 15th of Feb, kinda ritual here for the opener also, I don't recall of ever getting a squirrel with the ( wolves ) in them here but have gotten quite a few cottontail's that had them, figured as a rabbit has to sit pretty tight while in the grass nest, hides or what ever the dens are called was the reason the horse flies bite them, now since a squirrel is a dang sight more active while out of the leaf nest's and den's and stop to scratch the chiggers that they wouldn't be as easy for the fly to bite and then lay the egg, Plus with the squirrel being way up off the ground help's a lot also.

Here in Michigan it starts on Sept 15th, which happens to be a Saturday this year. Won't have to take vacation time from work.
