OK i shot a really big squirrell the other day. I skinned it out and cleaned it real good. My problem is that there are alot of small little hairs still on the meat. How and whats the best way to get all these small hairs off the meat ?>

dish rag Clean one if ya got it, and a mix of 50/50 white distilled vinigar and water...soak the rag and wipe the hair away..you can also just let .em set in a pan of salted water over night in the fridgidare...make sure you use a non-reactive pan or bowl (glass or Stainless steel)....

There's ways to clean a squirrell to limit this problem. You can cut around the hind quarters and the anus, step on it's two hind feet and pull on it's tail until the hide is wrapped around the squirrels neck. Then keep holding the squirrel with your feet still on his and cut the front legs and neck. Then all you have to do is cut the hind legs and gut him. There should hardly be any hair on the squirrel at all after this. Don't cut to close to the tail or you will just pull it off. This is the quickest and easiest way I know of.

Which is more common practice? Skin, THEN gut? or Gut, THEN skin?

I personally like to get a bucket of water and put the whole thing in there and give it a minute or two to get nice and wet. Remove from water. Then I take and cut/gut from pelvic bone to thorax splitting pelvis and chest wide open and cleaning outside of the bucket on the ground. Dip back in the water for a few seconds when clean and then take out and off with the feet and head. Then back in the water and skin in the water. If you keep him wet the whole time there will be no hair whatsoever. I also take a butane torch to the meat when complete if there happens to be any hair to burn it off real quick and clean. The water helps to keep you clean also instead of clotted blood going everywhere.

If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles.

I personally like to head shoot them with a 22lr and that in itself prevents any hair in the meat. I learned to head shoot my squirrels when I was about 9 years old but there to if you like the brains with scrambled eggs then try a chest shoot- not much meat there anyway. If the squirrel is on the back side of the tree try throwing a stick or rock on the ground on that side of the tree to run the squirrel to your side so you can get the shot. A good squirrel call can sometimes work to move the squirrels also. I prefer to skin the squirrels then gut them and wash them real good under a strong water pressure hose, rubbing them as you wash off all the blood then put them in a pan of salt water to finish cleaning out any blood missed by washing. Shotguns make to big a mess for my taste not to mention the buckshot you have to deal with when eatting them.

Thanks for the info guys. After i skinned the critter i soaked it in salt water for a day and the hair still stuck to the meat. I used a clean/new scotch brite pad with the green scouring on one side. That seemed to get most of the hair off. I will try the water bath next time and see if that works for me.

clint41, yea, that is the best way to clean a tree rat. I have some friends that do it that way.
Hate the hair on the thing when done, I boil them in salt water anyway and that helps with the hair problem, as well as removed the blood, then roll them in flower and fry them.

MMMMM FIBER!!!! I cut a small hole in the back behind the shoulders and then turn the hide inside out. Pop the tail off and then clip the feet and head. Clean as a whistle. THEN gut them and drop them in a big pot of salt water/vingar for a bit before cooking or freezing.

Best way to get the hair off we have found is to use a propane torch and brush the flame over the skinned animal. The hair burns easily and then you can brush it off with your hand. We do the same for deer.

I have alwaws done this myself. just do as little cutting on the skin as possible, that will cut the hair and and it will go EVERYWHERE.

For me, that was the biggest source of my hair issues.

I have an old coonass friend who can clean them faster without a knife almost and clean them clean with no hair. I have never been able to pick up on it though. He pulls the tail off one way, the head another and drops them in a pot of water whule he gets the others ready to go as well. Then guts and cuts. Most amazing thing I have seen. 2o squirrels cleaned in 30 minutes is not unreal for thsi feller.
