You can use CCI small rifle primers for the .223. Remember that primers from different manufaturers are slightly different. If you work your load up with the CCIs you should be fine. If you switch primer brands, demending on how close you are to the top of a give load, you may want to drop back a bit on the powder and work your way back up to be sure that the new primer does not lead to excessive pressure or changes in load performance.

If you look in your manual.  With the 55 grain bullet.  There is a load that you can even use small rifle magnum primers lighting up WW748 powder.  I have started using this load.  I have found a little better consistancy down range with this load with a little better velocity.

Are you using it in an autoloader? Some primers are softer than others and will prematurly fire if used in a firearm with a floating pin desgin ( primarily found in military style rifles) check the recipe load book to make sure of the application

Perhaps you could expound on this a bit, aaronvan.  If there is a primer manufactor that is suspectable to slam fire, then it needs to be taken off the market.  The only time I've ever run into something like that was with a firearm with a sticking fireing pin, then it was a cleaning issue not a fault with the primers.

I will have to find the article about the study but it was just that some of the cheaper brand have softer faces and can have a slam fire issue but if I remember correctly cci and winchester are the better of the two and that is one of the reasons wincherster started producing the 7.62 line up as it has a harderf ace

As the article you refered to states, "the single most significant cause to such slam-fires can be traced back to improper seating, not the primer itself. "

I have used both CCI 400 and 450 primers in thousands of loads with no problems. These have been used in bolt and semi autos. Load them up and shoot them.

dwisler1, If you've got a supply of CCI 400 primers, then by all means, use them. Don't go out and buy a different brand primer, just because your load data references a different brand. There's not much difference from one brand to another.

CCI makes a good primer.  I use them and Winchester myself.  I heard years ago that Federal's primers were too soft to use in semiauto's.  I don't know how true that statement was.  That's just what I'd heard.
As far as factory ammo goes.  Well, in fact. I've gotten rid of them. The chinese made 7.62x39 ammo has soft primers.  And dirty powder.  I've had slam fires in my sks using this ammo. I'm talking about 2 to 4 rounds going off with one trigger pull.  The first time it happened.  I thought it was my imagination. That time two rounds fired.
